View Full Version : 'Shrek 2' success to spawn more sequels
RobertoOrtiz 05-25-2004, 02:41 AM Quote:
"Record-breaking "Shrek 2" cast a bigger box-office spell than first imagined, convincing distributor DreamWorks SKG that even grumpy green ogres can live happily after -- at least for two more sequels.
Opening in a record 4,163 theaters last Wednesday, the computer-animated storybook satire posted $129 million in ticket sales during its first five days across North America, the most ever for a mid-week release.
The previous five-day record for a Wednesday opening was set in December by "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King," which grossed $124.1 million through its first Sunday.
For the three days beginning Friday, the traditional start of the weekend box office, "Shrek 2" generated $108 million, making it the second-biggest opening ever behind the $114.8 million release of "Spider-Man" in May of 2002.
"That's better than anyone could have anticipated, even in our wildest dreams," Jim Tharp, DreamWorks president of domestic theatrical distribution, told Reuters as final weekend figures were issued on Monday showing higher receipts than were initially reported.
The head of DreamWorks animation, Ann Daly, said that with the success of "Shrek 2," the studio would move ahead, one at a time, with plans for a third and fourth installment.
"It wasn't really advisable to start working on three and four until we knew that we actually had something in two, and certainly this weekend confirmed that we do," she said.
Daly said DreamWorks was in final talks with the principal voice actors to return, including Mike Myers (news) and Cameron Diaz (news) as the newlywed green ogres with horn-shaped ears, Eddie Murphy (news) as the talking Donkey, and Antonio Banderas (news) as the swashbuckling Puss in Boots. "

Shrek 1, Shrek 2, Shrek 3, Shrek 4...
We'll have Shrek movies coming out our ears!

heres to hopein they keep them fresh and dont burn out the idea.
Dear god... A trilogy, I'd live with. But 4!! They're really pushing their luck when it comes to sequelitis. Even if they manage to keep it fresh, I for one will grow tired of the characters, jokes, and look.
Please don't ruin it for yourselves!
Dreamworks Animation should just move onwards and upwards instead of dwelling on past succesess IMO.

Can they really get Mike Myers to come back for two more movies. I guess they plan to "make an offer he can't refu$e"
Hell fire all actors and let's move to a %100 animation. Someday our children will remark how old we are because we actually grew up with "live" actors.

Well, I'm with zero2zillion, I guess a Shrek Trilogy would be nice, but more than 3 movies would be somehow boring. Don't get me wrong, I love Shrek, Dreamworks really earned to be successful, but for the sake of Shrek they should cut the line after the third movie is out and work on something different.

I think Shrek3 might be a bit too much.
At some point, it does start to become apparent that they are making these because of the bottom line and for the sake of lining pockets, instead of making good story-telling movies. How much story can they eek out of the Shrek franchise? My guess is that they'll start making Shrek and Fiona have little ogre babies. :hmm:
They should take the hint from Pixar who refused to do Toy Story 3. (they barely agreed to do 2)
Dreamworks should prove that they can be successful in making films other than Shrek. (SharkTale hans't convinced me just yet) While I love Shrek, its time to move on.
Nothing like milking it for all its worth, eh Katzenberg?

As far as they are quality movies, it is OK.
I am still waiting for Indiana Jones 4, Alien 5 and James Bond 23.
It is when the profits are more important than the love for the film when it becomes a problem. Like Lion King 1.5, 3.23, etc.

I saw Shrek 2 and loved it. I am looking forward to Shrek 3 and 4. Remember all of the Star Trek movies? I liked them all and could watch more if they were made.

It seems like any movie that breaks even automatically gets a sequel these days.
In some ways that's nice, and in other ways it's pretty sick.

I am totally down with Shrek 3 and 4. I was a little skeptical about the 2nd being wishy washy and unoriginal, but it was awesome, so I have faith that they will do well. Besides it means more jobs for all of us in the industry which is always a plus.

Actually, Im pretty sure shrek 1-3 was planed. I dont know if 4 was decided on before or after the money came in tho
Maybe Dreamworks only has 2 writers....one working on shrek movies 24/7 and the other throwing together Sharks Tail, and of course shrek advertisements :)
Off topic, any one know how big dreamworks render farm is?
Please stop at 3.
I mean Shrek should not go any further.
Unlike characters like Spiderman, James Bond, Xmen there is not much story to tell about Shrek, its not a big EPIC story or something that can be serialized as well as the above mentioned. please stop at 3 and move on.

I saw shrek 2 over the weekend. I'm a huge fan of the first movie.
I liked the second one but wasn't as impressed as I was with the first. My first thoughts coming out of the theatre was that it was nice to be back in that world, it was funny but I hopped they wouldn't make another film. Time for Dreamworks to dive into other unexplored worlds.

Rest assure, Dreamworks Animation has a lot of different stories in development. It's a real busy and exciting place. Even more so if possible after the fantastic opening weekend.

I'd say go on make them until they stop making money, if you've had enough after Shrek 2 or 3 then don't watch the rest it's not compulsory. Keep those who want more happy.
I remember Police academy 1 being the funniest film I'd ever seen when it came out the sequels were appalling progressively get worse but they never spoilt my memory of 1 so where's the lose?
I think it would be fine if a company like Dreamworks just got bigger so they can have their elite crew working on the new cutting edge stuff and maybe the first and second sequel, after that pass it on the second division team for DVD release only so they can get good experience hoping one day to move up into the elite team.

I just saw Shrek 2, and I thought the movie and the production values were in many ways better than Shrek 1.
I think that's important.
If a studio cheapened its name by releasing things that get worse instead of better, then that would hurt them. If a studio released a lot of junk people didn't like, people would not be looking forwards to what they made next. Besides, everyone working in CG likes having a chance to redo things and produce a better version. You always have your list of things that could have been better on the last film, areas you'd like to improve, and starting with an initial version of some assets, and some situations that are familiar, helps in finding more time to work on improvements.

I saw Shrek 2 on opening day, and must say it teetered off the edge into bad territory. No more sequels please! I could stand some more shorts/parodies/satires of fairy tales though...Shrek is now a marketing machine. Go look in your local grocery store if you don't believe me!

Maybe it's just me, but I enjoyed Shrek 1 (story-wise) much more than Shrek 2.
The visuals of S2 were fantastic, but the sequel reminded me of the traditional sequel to a popular movie.
I saw Shrek 2 yesterday at a Maya 6 screening yesterday - the Maya 6 presentation was much, much cooler IMO.

haha, perhaps i should have read the thread before posting, seems others feel the same way ;-)

I would enjoy seeing a Father and Son storyline. Either that or "A Father of the Bride" like story if they have a girl.
Or they could have the evil witch show up and ogrenap their baby, but the witch is actually Shrek's Ex. That would be funny. She's just jealous is all..
There are plenty of ideas that could fill out many sequels. I think they should play off of some of the skewed fairy tales that cameo in the movies.
