View Full Version : May to get a new Renderer?
minus 07-17-2002, 10:28 PM Just curious if there are any rumors going around that Maya will be getting a new render engine in the next year. I'm currently a happy Lightwave user... but I respect Maya's animation and dynamics tools. It's just that the render engine is not for me in it's current state. So what's the word on a render engine re-work?

I think it's pretty safe to say that the render is not a high priority item for AW. Maya is really designed for highend production, where the studios tend to use Renderman/proprietary renderers. You'll find very few highend studios doing production work through a native renderer I think, except for previews.
Besides theres nothing wrong with maya's renderer...

ohh there is a lot wrong with the maya renderer. we did some bigger productions with and the maya renderer has a lot of problems that really can be show stoppers:
- lacking stability: i never saw another renderer before that stops in the middle of the rendering, telling me all is fine but half the frames are missing
- quality of rendering: jiggling bump lines and AA problems that can only be fixed with very high AA settings (have the fun and compare a maya rendering including bump with a mental ray rendering)
- missing features: every other package i am aware of (even very cheap ones) include since versions features like GI, FG and others that maya still not has
- heavy memory consumption: have a look at a modern renderer like final render or brazil.. they use only a fraction of the ram
but in the overall it is not AS bad as most ppl say.. it only need a lot of atention and tweaking sometimes.
and concerning the rumour that a new renderer will come: i am conform with you.. no way :)
cheers
