The parts of the armour you want to remain rigid (some parts will need to flex i.e. chainmail / leather under garments), try parenting the pieces to te bones, rather than have them effected by the bones.
This way they will move along with the bones, but not be deformed by them.

Question: is the armor a part of the character's layer or on they on seperate layers of their own? (from the sounds of it, it's the former when it should be the latter)

yes, I do it in one layer in ACS 4, but if seperate layer it wouldn't deform at all ? The amour still need to parent or weight map to bones, and it will still deform right ??

If it's on a seperate layer and you parent it to the bone which moves it, then yes it won't deform; you don't even need weight maps for it.
example: For like the shoulder pads, I'd have each one on a seperate layer (the left one and the right one); then, parent each one to the upper arm bone (if the shoulder bone is unaffected by IK desendents, which it should be, then the pads won't move if you parent them to the shoulder bones).
