So I've started working on my final 3D film, and I'm seeking out opinions for costume designs ...

I'm working on a short film based on the character I created below and I need some opinions as to costume design work.

The film is called "The Nothing Girl" and her character is very shy, quiet and withdrawn ... borderline goth, but not really ....

If you have any suggestions beyond the ones I've drawn up, please feel free ... if you have any ideas concerning different accessories ...

(Some of you guys might remember the concept sketch)

I'm kinda partial to the one on the left ....

I'm getting a conflicted feeling about this. You say you want her to be shy, quiet and reserved but you've drawn her in a sleeveless short dress in each example.

Try a longer dress and some sort of cover-up for the shoulders and see if that works better. Probably would be good to go with a minimal amount of jewelry too. Shy girls aren't that flashy.

Hmmm ...

I'm really into the long sleeves idea ...

I'll try to post another design soon ....

Do you guys think the ahnk is too much?

Thanks for the response ...

I think the ahnk just a bit over the top, maybe if you make it smaller

i think u're very skilled in drawing.....
wanna know what a ahnk is???
don't speak english very well! (because didn't speak english for a long time)

maybe kirt is right..if she should be shy and such things..the dress is really to short!

Thanks for the reply ...

Yeah, an ahnk is the little symbol she's wearing around her neck ...

I'm going to shrink it down about 30 per cent, so it's less prominent ... I'm going to give her long sleeve, but I think the short dress is going to stick around ... I like the skinny legs ... it gives her this child like vulnerability ...

I've proxied her out and run her through some test anims in XSI and I like the way it's working out ....

But hey, maybe I'm just a dirty old man ...

Heheheheh.

Twoi guys in my class have vowed to do comics when they graduate rather than animation. Seems a common thing, in my opinion comics are harder as you can study a comic image you can't study a single fram of an animation, allows for doing some really cool cheats like doubling the length f an arm as it wipes behind a character and yet it looks more natural then not doing it.

 I think you got it now. Looks great!

I like the other images too. The "ARRRRR" guy looks fantastic! Good pose and it displays a lot of action.

wow, I really like the long sleeves, very nice

are the squiggely bits on the titlebar going to be characters too?
I hope they are because it looks a bit empty/uneven atm

could you spoil a little preview on the storyline?

Thanks a lot man ... You guys are keeping me from being lazy ...

Every time I start to slow down while working on this, I read your feedback and I'm fired up again ...

I'm putting all kinds of crazy attention to detail to make sure this thing lights up the screen, and this girl really comes to life ...

At the same time, I really value your guys' feedback, and take all your comments to heart ....

Thanks.

Anyway ... here's a post of the cleaned up version of the titlescreen .... I'm going to run some aftereffects anim tests this weekend (hopefully) ...

A beam of (2D animated) light will shoot across the title to reveal it diagonally, followed by a trail of pixie dust (picture title shot from the Secret of NIMH) ...

Let me know what you think ...

:D

The title graphic looks really nice, but you can tell by looking at it that you are right-handed. The oval skews a bit to the right at the top. Maybe you can salvage it by cropping the top part (everything above the two angels on the sides) and moving it over to the left. Your titles will probably have to be adjusted a bit too.

I really love the style ... keep going with it!:buttrock:

Ahhhh Damn ...

Sigh ... I see it now ... I'm gonna try and save it in Photoshop ... but failing that, I'll have to reclean sections of it ...

Thanks for being a second set of eyes though ...

But ... damn ...

Damndamn ...

Sorry to have to point that out. It was painful to mention it because you obviously had a lot of work put into the image. The good news is that the skew option fixes it good enough where it's hardly noticable (see below).

Just a reminder to always flip over your drawings and look at thewm again, this will point out these kinds of little mistakes really fast :)

alchoi
07-25-2002, 04:19 PM
Yeah ... I had some animator buddies come over and say that same thing ...

"You didn't flip your drawing did you???"

and

"What do you use your lighttable for? To stack magazines?"

They were merciless ..

Heheheheh ... but thanks Kirt .... I'm going to try and separate some of the elements later tonight and try that out ... it looks pretty good ...

;)

LucentDreams

I use my light table for its peg bar and FINAL cleanup only, otherwise place a blank piece over and draw againi, and flip to make sure the image works.

Thanks for all the help Kirt ...

I tweaked up the titlescreen as close as I could get it (I think ... I'll need a second opinion on whether or not it's good enough ...)

But I laid down some base colours ... did a cheesy bevel and emboss just to show you guys where I was going with this ..

(the velvet backing is my own paintwork ....)

I'll add another layer of hand painted tweaks and post again ...

Let me know what you guys think ....

Looking really good. I don't know how symetrical you want to make this ... the inner circle is good, but the angel on the left makes it appear oblong still. I had to put it in Photoshop with the grid on to make sure the thing wasn't skewed still.

Maybe you could bring her wing inward and up a little. Or add something to the angel on the right (a shield, halberd, etc.) to balance it a little more.

This is good work al_choi, the hardest part now is waiting for you to finish so I can see it colored and animated.

Keep at it

A quick markup ... the red line is the area I'm talking about

alchoi
07-26-2002, 08:33 PM
Cheers man ...

i really appreciate this ...

I'm going to add a wing to balance out the angel on the right ...

I think that'll be easier than trying to fudge the left angel ...

Damn ... I'd post my 3D leica for you guys, but it's a hundred meg at half rez ....

I'll keep you guys updated ....

I think with the angel on the right if you just brought her out to the right a little further it would probably balance it pretty good. Other than that I think it looks awesome.

Again ... anything you guys can help me out with ... I'll buy ya a beer ...

Jeez, kickass drawing, and you can model too? I hate you :D

Only thing I can see from this view is that her ankles/calves seem a bit huge compared to the design..maybe legs too, but not sure..can't immediately tell where the waist/butt are. May have some oddness in the face structure around the mouth and cheeks, but I dunno..wireframe?

maybe shoot her over to the 2d/3d wip..lot more signal-to-noise ratio, but would probably get more into specifics..

Really want to see the end result of all this..

alchoi
08-09-2002, 08:37 PM
Thanks for having a look ...

Yeah ... I'm having a tough time with the cheeks ... I'll post up a wireframe, but I definitely want to tweak out the lower portion of her face a bit more ....

As far as the legs go ... I added the volume to compensate, balance-wise, for her large Mary Janes (shoes) ... but I'll try her out again with skinnier legs and see if I like it ....

I wonder how I can slide this post over to the 2d/3d WIP without creating a new thread?

Thanks for your reply ... it was totally helpful ...

;)

great work al_choi. I've got 2 things to say about your 3d model though. I think the model sheets of the nothing girl are nice but you haven't captured it as much in 3d. You thin out her ankles more like in the 2d and shrink her chin down a bit and widen the eyes so they're longer. Your leaving your earlier concept and I think you shouldn't.

Cheers

Thanks man ... Yeah, I'm inclined to agree with you ...

I'm going to make the changes hypercube suggested ... and I'm definitely going to rework the face in another pass ...

BTW ... I like the new colouring job on your portfolio piece, Gamoron ... nice work ...

Thanks for the feedback guys ... believe me, it's helping out a lot ...

So here is what I am wondering, AL, since you have the skills why not draw the four point rotation of the character (or at least two, profile and front view) then you can at least compare on screen as to proportions and such. Keep up the good work.
