Hi guys,

Added the ad "Sony Mountain" with special effects from The Mill to CGFilms, on CGNetworks.com. More cool shorts and ads to come...

>> Sony Mountain << (http://www.cgnetworks.com/cgfilms/cgfilm.php?story_id=2097)

Enjoy

Pretty slick. Song is kind of annoying though. And of course, almost everyone in that people-mountain would be squished to death!... but interesting commercial.

It looked cool,

but I kinda found it horrific...like something out of 28 days later.

aww man this ad has been running in NZ for months. Its freakin awsome.

They used Massive for all the long distance shots for the human mountain, pretty impressive.

Yeah this ad has been running for a few months now (old news), but thought it best to archive it on CGNetworks along with a whole bunch of other ads and short films that we have.

It's absolutely brilliant! But what a compositing nightmare it would have been!

That's kind of what I was thinking. Having a bunch of sweaty strangers climb on top of me doesn't sound fun to me, even assuming you wouldn't get smushed beneath the crowd. This is a very odd way to advertise a product, especially a gaming console.

King of the mountain generally involved an actual hill or raised structure of some sort, and pushing each other off. Not a european-soccer-match style pile-on!

The song made the ad. It was a great touch.

It was a very interesting commercial and I found it fun to watch. One question though, "What were they selling"? Playstation 2's?

P.S. yes, I thought about all the people being crushed at the bottom as well.

Pretty amazing ad, I saw the making of this on a large screen, during the Mill's session at the Semi-Permanent Conference in Sydney. It's great to see people pushing the envelope, it looked like an insane amount of work for a commercial. At the same time I think the 'Irish Alien' one had just as much impact.

People aren't getting crushed, it's just various composits of a group of people climbing up a slope of sandbags in a street.

LOL. Um, obviously? I don't think anyone thought that people were actually being crushed, but what is depicted in the commercial is a human pile-on a couple hundred feet high. It would only take a few feet of people to crush you beneath :)

rickycox
05-21-2004, 04:55 AM
LOL Yeah duh! I don't think they had even a few feet of people. I could still see sandbags in the lead up scenes.

If I recall correctly they used Massive, just like the nike ole one, so it's mostly cg

edit: just read the article, 50 people on a cone shaped structure and thousand of massive agents whose IA isn't enough sophisticated to complain for the hazardous scene :p

oh , S--- what a crazy idea , think for a second if that would happen in real life , milions of people would mash to death, witch is a good thing cuz then the population on the earth would be less , haha :scream:

looked at it again an I´m liken it more and more. It has a great rythm in it (not the shirley temple song : ) and soo many details and little things going on. great AI and compositing work. just great ... should I get a PS

by the way, I have no prob with comercials that dont point straight to the product. lets be greatfull not just to see smiling people with clean clothes and high end product shots in ads.

would love to see that making of ricki saw in sidney

fun anyone - yes here!!!!

I find it quite incredible that this add was actually made at all. This is so incredibly expensive to make...

Anyway: it looks nice and the idea is both bizar and cool. I like it!

It is great work, but not a great ad. There is a vague sales pitch here, leaving your mind to wonder. If Sony had a version of X Box Live, it would better apply there.

LustRazor

Neat concept.

They did NOT use Massive. As you can see, the commercial was shot in a 3rd world country where real humans cost less to squish than CG ones. Those are actual peasants, millions of them, fighting over a PS2 dropped from a helicopter by heartless Sony execs.

The guy on the top of the pile enjoys a brief victory, though, because Sony has no plans of ever air-dropping a television.

Beamtracer

They released the ad at the wrong time. I don't think human pyramids would go down too well with the audience at this time.

I knew this commercial from the television yet, but every time I saw it, I incredibly liked it! So incredibly nice FX and a cool song ;) ! Tnx for this feature ;) :)

I've had a Playstation, and Playstation 2 since the day they came out and I didn't really understand that commercial. Very nicely shot and the CG was not even noticeable (and thats a good thing) but the message I didn't get at all. Anyone care to explain? Seems if anyone, the target audience (such as myself) should get the message, but I don't. I understand the king of the hill reference, but it doesn't seem to have anything to do with video games in the spot.

Hey, It was my first time seeing this ad and I liked it. One thing keep bugging me though, what the it have to do with PS2. Maybe the should have had a PS2 at the top. At least something to directly tie in with the product.

P.S. Is climbing on top of sweaty humans really fun?

Hey maybe that was there intention for it to be a little ambigous. They accomplished their goal though, it will be stuck in your mind, trying to figure out what the heck the point was.

P.S. Stange way of getting you to think about the product, but it works.

 it's incredible how you people think "Oh, that's so unreal, people would get crushed at the bottom!"

this is a cg forum, stop thinking about that and start drooling on the massive-action! :p

and i think this is one of the best ads ever made

They are invoking violent soccer fan-type passion, focusing that energy on the brand, rather than an actual product shot.

Their target seems to be anyone who lives in a 3rd world slum. Is it possibly an untapped market for console games?

I cant believe the narrow minded bull I'm reading here. It's no fun to climb up on a bunch of people? And what if they are sweaty and they smell bad?

How would you know if it's fun or not, you could not possibly try it, and the fact alone that they started you to think about it makes this ad a success. It's totally great, looks so realistic and bares a strong message that you shoud find a way to do somethong crazy once in a while, even if that ends up being playing games on ps2.

oh, the chrushed people, come on! :)

What, the goal wasn't to see who can make the most idiotic post? How about this, "Oh, those poor sandbags at the bottom!"
