So, i'm at home watching the Macworld keynote streamed live via Quicktime 6 on a cable modem (pretty cool and no hickups whatsoever) and Steve just announced that A|W will be releasing Maya 4.5 for OSX first. I'm headed over to Javitz Center immediately after the keynote and we'll see if A|W is there and actually showing it.

I'm a PC user, but I have to say that's pretty cool. Good for Mac users. Hopefully it'll help Apple Mac more inroads into the production market.

Holy Crap!

Alias|Wavefront is announcing Maya 4.5 at Macworld. Maya on Mac is 25 percent of the company's business.

Looks like Maya for OSX and Apple have been quietly been doing very very well in high end production.

Based on A|W's website, it looks like they are just going for parity with Maya Complete. They make no mention of the existence of an Unlimited port to Maya. So no Fluid, Live, Fur, or Cloth for Mac users yet. Still, users will now be able to use OSX Maya in a Windows or Linux environment because the binary files will be identical across platforms, and SubDivision surfaces are now part of the Complete package. Great news for Mac users. I hope they have plans on bringing the Unlimited feature set to Mac users before the end of the year. Maybe they'll talk about it at Siggraph.

Everyone is looking at the Subdivisions, which are cool...

But the bigger news is the rest of the modeling toolset, Advanced Modeling Tools, from the Unlimited side of things... Little things like Booleans was missing from Complete...

And the UV stuff, if it works as marketing says, should really be cool!

More powerful Mac workstations should come next month, and ungodly powerful Macs should be about 4-5 months after that...

Along with Unlimited...!

And the revealing of Apples labours in the refining of compositing softwares...

Apple is poised to provide the workstation solutions for the entertainment 3d market that SGI used to feed, at half price or better...

But that is just one mans opinion.

Don't forget... Steve Jobs’ whole existence is to say two things....

"Revolution(ary)" then some cheesy feature.

And

"First" on Mac.

But the reality is no one cares about first. Every time I go into a Mac store and someone says “it was first on Mac”, makes me want to smack the guy. Hey Jobs… Multi-button mouse… Last on Mac. I personally think the iPod is about the only really cool thing Mac makes... I have a Mac and I still can't get OSX because the MOTU has not made a OSX version. And there are not high-end 3d cards for Macs. So for 3d work I just use a PC… plus, a new PC doesn’t cost over $3,000…

Windows sucks too... but Jobs just pisses me off. Linus used to be cool, but now he has an ego... and he's sucks too.

I am hoping that when the aliens take over they will have a better platform and OS.

It's already announcing for all platforms on the AW website. So if Maya OSX is really going to be first distibuted, looks like it will be only by a few days. If that.
