This is my attempt to make photorealistic metal. The image is for a pitch to convince a client to use renders instead of photos. The intention is to fool him to believe that this is a photo, before telling him that it is a render.

Tell me if you think it will succeed.

Any crit is welcome (good or bad, I can take it)

Modeled in Max, rendered in Vray. Touch up in Photoshop.

I think the metal is close but the surface the barrings are on is a give away.

Try a wood surface it will add some move dynamic refections as well.

I agree with broken cycle a wood surface might work. Or try using a slight noise map as a reflection map, just to try and dirty things up. Finger print smudges, dirt, grease and so on, and usually on bearings and can be seen when you that close up. Other than that, it is looking nice!

Hi coboman,

Your bearings are looking good. I would like to make a couple of suggestions if I may :)

Firstly, I can't really tell from this angle, but it looks like you've missed out the "cage" that the balls are held in. This part is important as it keeps the balls secure and stops the 2 rings from twisting under load. This part is a bit of a nightmare to model though, believe me, I've tried

The second suggestion would be to make the sides of the rings (the top faces on the bearing that's laying flat) completely flat. These parts are machined flat on a bearing so that it sits flush in it's housing. Most bearings are of a push fit design and as a result are made to very strict tolerances and have very flat surfaces to ensure a good snug fit.

If you'd like to have a look at a bearing model that I made last year that shows the cage around the balls, I posted it in the "Work in Progress" forum at 3dbuzz. The address for the picture is here (http://sv3.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/attachment.php?s=&postid=308065)

If that direct link doesn't work, then the address for the WIP thread is here (http://sv3.3dbuzz.com/vbforum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=33895&perpage=10&pagenumber=2)

I love this sort of modelling/rendering and I'm looking forwards to seeing how this all turns out :)

OK, thank you very much for the suggestions.
It is back to the drawing board for me, I'll change the floor, place lots of dirt, scratches and fingerprints (I specially like that one). I'll place my progress some time next week.

Thank you very much.

yeah the edges on the bearing are too rounded, i have skateboard bearings and they are pretty.. flat

It looks great for cg, but it looks too clean and shiny to be real. The image quality is way too good for a real photo. Try adding some grain or something to it.
