View Full Version : Making a new Matte/shadow material

Would it be possible to make a new matte/shadow material that would act like this?:

It should not cast shadows on it self or any other matte material
and it can only receive shadows from any non-matte material.

Has any one made this kind of material?

Exactly, I'm having the same problem. I'm rendering a character against the background of a miniature set I made. This set is a forest, and I want the virtual 3d-matte/shadow trees I put in front of the trees in the background to cast shadows onto the character, but not onto the other trees around it, and still I want the character to cast shadows on everything...
The only way to do it now is rendering in multiple passes, which all makes the shots a lot more difficult to manage...

It would be great if the matte/shadow material had more options, like:
cast shadows on self toggle
cast shadows on [list of objects]
recieve shadows from [list of selectable objects]

Is it possible to make something like that yourself?
