The uhh dots uhh could be the energy meter? tells u how much power u have left ;) yeah thats it :)

actually according to the star wars universe, light sabres never run out of energy due to the fact that they are so efficiently built.

Well...
A lightsabre's powercell was very efficiently used, but it could run out of power, or the powercell could become shorted, overpowered, or lost during normal wear and tear battles.
But the chances of this were so low, a Jedi rarely had to replace the powercell.
Remember when Darth Maul's double-bladed lightsabre got sliced in half by Obi-Won Kenobi in The Phantom Menace? Obi-Wan's lightsabre cut one of Darth Maul's powercells, and thus that side of the lightsabre was useless. If he had cut right down the middle, missing both powercells, Darth Maul could have used both halves of the double-bladed lightsabre, one in each hand. (Like Anakin did in Attack of the Clones.)
:hmm: Sorry, had to put my Star Wars knowledge in... :hmm:

just outta curiousity, why does the blade of a lightsabre cast a shadow? obviously the hilt would, but even in the movies i see the blades casting a shadow in some shots.

I think, more importantly than why do they cast shadows, is why does'nt the user melt from the heat?
Remember the door cutting scene in E1? Poor mister Gin would have caught on fire!
...It's sci-fi...who the hell cares...
All I know, is that I want one...

The balde of the lightsabre casta shadow for the same reason objects on Tattooine only casta single shadow.....Special Effects!
Lightsabres in the movie actually had painted bladed so that the computer could draw over the correct area. They didn't think or didn't care to take out it's shadow.
As for melting Jedi, the blade has a cooling system built into the handle, though most of the heat occurs at the Blade Emmitter and the Blade Matrix, both on the end of the lightsabre. So one shoud be kept cool enough...
But 3dZealot had it right int he above post, it's sci-fi!

Sounds like a job for the energizer bunny rabbit!

Firs it is very good picture.
Light sabel cast shadows in the movie for the same reason table lamp cast shadow. CG in the movies does not follow phisical laws at all for the reason it is too expencive and triks is much more effective. If we would not see shadow from the sable it would look really CG cause we got used to see shadows in the real life.
Also as far as the hot part go, I think if some one good give some (some) explanation of why beam(blade) stops going further then some distance I would try to explain melting. I mean how laser can possible go no more then 1 meter and stop.
It is all just SF.
And again good job on the Picture.

MY little theory... is that weapons in the Star Wars universe tend to use energy contained in oscillating magnetic fields... like ball lightning. That could explain why 'lasers' don't travel at light speed, but crawl along much slower. This would also explain the lightsaber, and how it could be kept efficient-- the laser is being bounced back and forth between the hilt and the limits of its magnetic field at the blade's tip. The energy loss would be very low as long as nothing was interfering with that path, like... walls, human bodies, that kind of thing... presumably the field is also designed to help limit the heat that could leak out... though of course being that close to that glowing door would've been VERY HOT, but hey, Qui-Gon's a Jedi, so of course he's okay! THe thing I don't understand is why they're not so bright they burn the eyes to look at.. bleh. Oh, and of course the amount of energy it'd take to make a lightsaber work, much less for a really long time, would still be INCREDIBLY high... if the thing failed, it would probably EXPLODE and take out a small building. Whee!
Now, since these things are magnetic... that would explain why they go through all kinds of things, EXCEPT each other, and blaster bolts and so forth, and the special shields that the Destroyer droids and so forth have. You could stick your arm through that shield, THEN turn the lightsaber on, and slice the droid in half. You see? Of course, by this token... a whip-shaped one would be REALLY difficult to get to work properly... oscillating beams of light have no tension to be whipped around with, and it'd be really hard to maintain a field that kept changing shape like that. So there. :p

Holy people are still talking about the light saber? deadly :) hehe I modeled this ages ago and it took me 3 hrs to model. with morph targets set up for the beam of light :)
man a lot of theorys about this fictional object, however where would we be without those fictional writers today :)
thnx for the comments and critts :)

Hi guys.. :)
Just so everyone knows why a lightsaber dosen't run out of energy :
"Lightsabers have changed little in the thousands of years of their employ by the Jedi Knights. Those who believe the Jedi order began on the ancient world of Ossus point to the abundance of Adegan crystals in the system as proof. These crystals are ideal for the creation of lightsabers, as they focus the energy released from a saber's power cell into the tight, blade-like beam. Early lightsabers did not have self-contained power cells, and were instead connected by a conducting cable to a belt-worn power pack.
Once unleashed, the power channels through a positively charged continuous energy lens at the center of the handle. The beam then arcs circumferentially back to a negatively charged high energy flux aperture. A superconductor transfers the power from the flux aperture to the power cell. As a result, a lightsaber only expends power when its blade cuts through something. So efficient is the blade, that it does not radiate heat unless it comes into contact with something.
The blade's color depends on the nature of the jewel it springs from, and while its length is fixed in the case of a single jewel lightsaber, lightsabers equipped with multiple crystals can have their length varied by rotating a knob that allows the focusing crystal activator to subtly modify the refraction pattern between the gems."

I read "Shadows of the Empire" a while ago... there is a scene in there that describes Luke building his own Light sabre... they mention that it is powered by some kind of Jewel... I don't remember exactly but I can look it up... no mention of power cells in sabres tho.

some nice theorys there, i reckon someones built one somewhere, be it a kid in a garage, a mad russian scientist (maybe this is wat caused tunguska explosion), or the military...
i made that exacpt lightsaber in c4d, but didnt texture it well and didnt render with GI, and lost the c4d file D:
ill see if i have the jpg
btw nice saber

Anieves, the crystal focuses the beam, it has nothing to do with the power source-- look up how lasers work, sometime.

cycon look at this from starwars.com
as they focus the energy released from a saber's power cell
