Okay here is an example of somthing i would like to do in max that I can do in blender but am not sure how to go about it....Here is the scene setup

As you can see there is a block behind a plane in this scene..in BLender if i turn down the planes transparency and make it "shadeless"
http://img69.photobucket.com/albums/v209/edge_w8/mat.bmp
It wont render and it will block out anything that is behind it...making for very good blocking out solutions for compositing...

Soooooo..my question is,,is there somthing similar i can do in max to get this effect??

Yes, you need the matte/shadow material. It will do that, and maybe a lot more than blender's material.

You normally use it to have invisible surfaces to have shadows cast on. Used mainly for compositing objects onto a bitmap background; you'll want shadows amongst other things to make it realistic.

Slightly OT but important nonetheless, you should never use bitmaps for web work. Save and upload your images as gifs or jpgs, not bmps. It is easier on those who view the images, and on the web, speed is important. Thanks.

Cool thanks rens..you just saved me alot of md2 exporting to blender from max!!! That kicks ass..it is better than blenders!!..I always wondered what that matte shadow shader was for specificlly..now i know (me not very smrt)Slightly OT but important nonetheless, you should never use bitmaps for web work.
