View Full Version : (first post) coral reef
hey all, im new to the boards here :surprised . Here's 2 frames from an animation ive been working on of the great barrier reef, sorry bout the heavy compression. For the most part its finished, just need to add some fish in, but any suggestions are welcome of course.

I like it!
It looks so dreamy, you should add a few mermaids!
Looks really good. Donīt forget plankton.
and how about some tar to make it even more realistic ?
Sorry, just kidding...:D
Yeah, good job, maybe some volume lights and plancton would be great.
And maybe some blue fog at the baground.
:buttrock:
Juste continue
good idea about the mermaids neko...but something tells me the client wouldnt be too thrilled about the idea. <shrug>
lyca i guess its hard to see with the compression but there are floating particles in there...not really plankton shaped but they work. And as for the tar, I'm already on it...
najd maybe it isnt prominant enough but there are volumetric lights shining through the water. and the blue fog exists, i just had to push it back a little cause the client really wanted the colors to pop out. :hmm:

Hey Rye thats the best underwater stuff I've seen in a long time!
Is that for a real job?

All my friends agree, it's ridiculously good.
Merman maybe?
looks great,
but in that last picture that volumetric light shinning through makes it look like sand in the background which then throws everything off cause that would mean the sand is going out of the water at a serious angle. Maybe its the the image size and compression though that makes it look like that
Recon: wow thanks. good to know :) and yes it is for a real job.
Kaz: I see how you could think it might be sand, but when its animating, it doesnt look like sand in the least bit, its pretty obvious that its light shining through the water. I'd post the animations but i dont think they would fit here

That looks real!!!
Explain what you did for the water top
Its just a flat plane with some materials on it. I took some screen grabs of it for ya. For the bump slot, an animated noise was used, but the Z offset was animated instead of the phase.
and the noise map...hope this helps :)
Yea, that's the easy part, what about the texturing though. Just a mask on it? And the yellow is from the spot light?
Sorry i didn't specify before.
What about the coral, is that just a hair plugin?
there is a reflection map, just a picture of a sky. the yellow comes from the specular color of the material. Theres also an omni light shining up at the water, thats where that specular highlight is coming from. The only plug in is grass-o-matic. It was used to make the dark green grass at the bottom the pic. everything else had to be modeled.
heres just a lighting change. i was trying to get more contrast. Which do you like better the first one or this new one? btw the pink thing floating the top is a fish that just turned. Kinda hard to tell when its not animating.
