Hey...

Sorry if this was asked before, but is there a decent motion blur plugin for AE out there? We have tested quite a few in our company, but none gave the satisfying production results. It would really come handy in a 3D sequence that takes a long time to render, or in a sequence that uses instanced particles with animated objects, which cannot be motion blurred.... or if you are on a very tight time constraint ;)

What is your experience in applying motion blur in post? Can you achieve the results that can be compared to a motion blur in a 3D package?

ALES

P.S.

if a similar thread already exists, please post the link... thanks

Though I haven't used it in any true production environment, I have played around a little recently with a demo of Reelsmart Motionblur (http://www.revisionfx.com/mblur.htm) on a short I'm working on.
My results varied widely from scene to scene, but what I noticed was that it worked quite well for most 2D movement. For 3D movement, it wasn't all that great though, because obviously a 2D image lacks any information about movement in the Z-direction. Still it was possible to get results that were better than without any motionblur applied.

So I can't give any general recommentation, but I do think you can get away with motionblur done in post in many scenes. For a still image it will probably look better, or at least more realistic, when done directly in 3D - yet if you look at a movie with 24+ fps, nobody will notice minor differences in motionblur quality anyhow.

Hope I could help!

If you're working on (standard) TV animation you can render you stuff to fields and get additional temporal smoothness (so no motion blurring required to make it look like its smooth).
I havent used that much motion blur but best would be to motion blur your AFX stuff in AFX and 3D stuff in your 3D package - as they now in which direction and you can precisely control the amount of MB.

Another road you might want to explore is this one (http://www.alamaison.fr/3d/lm_2DMV/lm_2DMV.htm). Motion vectors is a good way to get accurate results, if you can find a way to make your 3D software output the right data.

I dunno how much this method will work but i guess it does involve a lot of composting and layers. Suppose u were to render your sequence as RLA's and turn on the additional channels in your 3D application..like object ID's and Material ID's and Z-depth, etc...you would be able to isolate the elements and apply different motion blurs to them. What do u think of this method...feasible in a tight production schedule? (I always get scared that i might screw up on the motion blur in 3D and will have to render the sequence all over again.) Compositing techniques enable me to have greater control right? Let me know. Thanks. :)

Cheers,
