View Full Version : Architecture: Living_Room
metallimonkey 05-18-2004, 07:23 AM Hello all,
Here is a scene that I tried to recreate from pottery barn's website. I tried to get the overall feeling of the image in my render not necessarily down to the last detail. Let me know what you think, comments welcome.

cool.. i think it would benefit from more shininess and bump mapping to the floor in front left of the table, or perhaps more light cast from that side at any rate, like in the ref pic, to make it look like a mat. i thought they were funny looking thin floorboards at first.
great work with the materials.

Thanks for the nice comments guys.
johan21- you're right, some spec on the floor would help to show off the difference between the mat and floor.

Nice work!
- I really like the couch seats, but the armrests look a little plastic.
- The items on the table look like they are floating a little.
- The area under the table is a little too dark.

So good I need a wire to believe you. :) Looks like a composite 2/3 real 1/3 composted 3D. :applause:
Yes, show a wire!
How did you model the couch (wrinkles etc)? NURBS, Polys?
:applause:

the bump for the rattan is too sharp and stepped.. it creates some problem with aa.. specially for the pillows on the sofa.
there's some spotted overbrighted areas.. on the big cushion and on the lamp near the window.
overall, nice work.

it looks great enough. but the leather seats may have higher specular.

its very nice, the only problem I see is with the open magazine at the bottom. It just doesn't seem/look real.

Love that lighting......floor looks good, but even though the leather is great, there's something off. Maybe the specular like someone else suggested.
Awesome job!!

I think the book and the rocks need some kind of a shadow. And if there is one, it's to faint

I think the floor should look "dirtier" like in the ref pic. And the table needs a bit more light reflection on the bottom right, like in the ref pic.
But other than that, an average person probably won't be able to tell them apart. :)

Excellent work, the only thing that i notice is on the windows.
On the first image (i.e. the ref image), the wall seems to be "straight", like 90 degrees relative to the floor, however yours seem to be a little tilted. If this was your intention, then its pretty cool, however the curtains seem to be "sticking" to the wall, instead of falling (and due to gravity be in 90 degrees relative to the floor).
Anyway, excellent work.

This is perfect. Funny thing is, i looked at the pictures first, thinking, "Geeze, that looks just like a Pottery Barn advert. I wonder if they could start using CG in their catalogs."!!!
Excellent job. Spot on!

...amazingly done.Nothing to say.Just an excellent lighting work...what renderer did you work with?(and what software?)

The floor should have a subtle reflection creating specularity, then the table will block the specularity from the windows. It would look nicer I believe.
Very good work overall!

I'll comment on the book
The only problems I saw:
that it looked sort of soft.
It looks as though it's one book. However, in the image it seems to be two. In your render, the piece of the book that sticks out a lot still looks like it flows into the spine of the main organized book. Do I make sense?
The piece that sticks out on the bottom of the book, as in the pages, are maybe supposed to be another book under the open one, but in yours it looks as though it's just a big awkward sticking out section of pages.
The whole render, including the book, is incredible though. You did an excellent job.

Wow. I like this. Very nice lighting and texturing. You did a good job with the leather couch surface. I did some leather a while back so i know how hard it is to make, has a lot to do with the lighting. Congrats on the frontpage!

If that was a 3D image then I couldn't tell the difference if it was real

really good work. Something I always do to match a photo is to look up the contrasts of the dark and light values of the image.
I made this quick thing in photoshop which might help you (and me to describe what I mean) on the way of make it even more perfect.
Basicly it's about getting the noise in the dark areas to be better.

I hope that it will give you some more inspiration to push it even further.
Great work!

Wow, front page, what an honor. Thanks for all the great comments guys!
EdHarriss- good point about the arms of the couch, I should add some minor wrinkles in there to break it up a little.
onlooker- I'm posting a wire at the start of the thread
m.h- I model in Polys pretty much everything I make
francescaluce- good points. It's the displacement on the pillows that needs to be tweeked a little to get rid of that sharpness. and yes, there are a few spots where it is blown out a little.
lukx- you smelt correctly, I did in fact use vray
HapZungLam- I think you are right, the leather could use a little more specular push.
idvah-i see what you mean- it might be just too evenly lit
Mananetwork-yea, i think that yellow is blowing the shadows away
Shinova- yea, you're right, but I mainly just wanted to get the overall feel.
J-Bird- heh, yea, pottery barn should start a 3d catalog.
Profane- I use Max and render with Vray
hesido- good call, the more people talk about the spec, the more I want to add it in, but it's done for now.
Annuostivix- yea, those are 2 open magazines on top of eachother.
otacon- Thanks, I appreciate it! Congrats to you as well, I remember seeing your images on the front page too.
StefanA- thanks for the comment! I mainly wanted a clean render that looked like the image, not nessarily a "photo" render. Thanks for showing me that though, i'll keep it in mind for the future.

the atmosphere is nice_like the leather couch alot_but the texture on the table can see the repetition though plus the cut of of it at the edges looked akward_other than that excellent

You know, it really amazes me how some users around here go above and beyond to look for faults on other peoples work instead of looking at work for what it is...
I guess there is a very fine, faint line between constructive critisism and PITA nitpicking:shrug:
I personally think you did a great job. Keep it up.

Thanks guys
me_aaeem- yes, it does reapeat there, good eye, but i don't think it is noticeable enough to take away fro the image. Thanks for the compliment.
tomaa- under the tin cactus section on my site is more architectural stuff.
El Rafo- I do all sorts of stuff that range in subjects, this is just what I wanted to do at the moment.
SNoWs- Thanks for the comment, I appreciate it. As for the nitpicking, it is expected whenever you post something, and some of it really helps, sometimes points out obvious stuff that is left out.
