I posted this question a few days ago, but apparently it was lost in the 6-14 data loss... So here it is again:

I was told that a game engine can cost tens of thousands of dollars.. My question was whether this applies to full game engines only, or are things like physics engines and AI plugins this expensive as well?

Engines can cost a lot of money; some are licensed at a small cost, and some are available free of charge. There is another thread here that discusses the wide range of options.
