View Full Version : Subd Texture/UV Distortion Issue
jRocket 05-17-2004, 05:01 PM I have an object which I would like to use as a SubD surface, but whenever I convert it, I get lots of distortion and stretching in certain areas. The UV's are layed out properly and it seems to work fine with just polysmooth. I have it set to get the UV's from the low-poly cage, but it still seems to mess them up pretty badly. I have attached a picture to illustrate my problem. Any know of a solution to my dilemma?

DUDE! I posted the same exact question for the same exact problem. Complete with sample photo. I have no idea what to tell you to do. No one's answered mine yet either. I've read SEVERAL techniques recomending texturing subd's with a poly copy and transfering the UV's. But you get that weird stretching. I don't mind working around it, but it's just so hard to tell why and where it's screwing up.
This should be a link to my thread in case anyone is able to answer it.

Looks like it's a mystery. I am aware that old versions of Maya screwed up the polysmooth uv's, but that was fixed in Maya 5. I'm using Maya 5 now. If this is an issue with Maya, maybe it is fixed in 6?

I have a similar problem with a character that I did, although my situation was somewhat different. I have a character that's modeled out of polys, I laid the UV's out on everything and all was good. I converted the the poly mesh to SubD, all was still good. Then after a low poly mesh was built for use as a wrap deformer for the SubD mesh, the UV's on the SubD mesh (only the right foot, the left foot and the rest of the character were fine) swam all over the place. I have yet to figure out why just this right foot is doing this, all the history was deleted before doing the wrap, it's not even bound or anything. So I'm sort of stuck in the same boat.

The PolySmooth is fine in my case. It's the Subd that's stretching so bad. And I'd REALLY rather animate the Subd. The first tests I did it looks so good when it bends and stretches. It's just in small patches that the texture screws up. It's doing it in maya 5 and 6.
