View Full Version : Help urgent !
maxguy 05-17-2004, 02:57 PM hey guys,..
Im trying to create a whirlpool effect in aan ocean,I tried particles with radial fields..not able to get it perfect..?i want to have two layers..one is the ocean and the other is the whirlpool formation using particles..?
Any ideas on how to do the whirlpool effect?
Pls help guys

have you tried using a vortex with particles?

yeah a vortex could work, and maybe to create the funnel of the whilpool you could put a Newton field, or a Drag...
These are to test though...and tweak the settings ...

I'm working on something for you that I think will work. I'm testing it out and if it works, I'll post directions on how to reproduce it.

Can you give some details on what exactly you need and what it's for? I'm working up a decent enough sim using some softbodies, creative UVs, and an ocean shader that looks like it will give decent results. The render times suddenly shot through the roof and I'm not sure why so I've called it off for tonight, but some details would be great too. Do you need to see it form or does it just need to be a whirlpool? Because showing it forming is going to be much more difficult to get it nice looking. Also, I assume this is not for a big project, is it for school or something? The example I'm working on, if it ends up looking like I think it will, would be good for a short school project but not for a feature film or anything. Would need a lot more layers and a lot more control but it really all depends what you're looking to do with it.

So I rendered out a bunch of frames but the OceanShader isn't behaving. Does anyone know if there is a way, probably thru coding, to get the OceanShader to flow towards a point? I currently have this vortex made through geometry and the UVs/geometry laid out so that I thought that simply waves following the UVs would flow down and spiral into the vortex but I neglected the fact that half of the vortex is going to have water flowing up and OUT of it with that method. I'm thinking there's got to be a way to code the direction so it flows towards a certain point, thinking off the top of my head maybe needing to do it in polar space, but I don't remember how a lot of that works.
Anyhoo, I'm dead tired and probably not making a ton of sense but anyhow, I'll post what I've got tomorrow evening after work and see if I can think of any ways to fix it.
Mayhap Duncan will pass by and provide some insight on controlling the wave direction.
Btw, title your threads correctly. "Help Urgent" is against policy and doesn't tell anyone what you need help with.

hi,
its for a small project only..and its more for a previz sake as of now!so i just need the formation of whirlpool in the ocean to be seen with ocean shader,..i tried using a plane, emitting particles(volume) from it and using vortex field to get the effect..not able to get the shape perfectly..will fluids(2d containers will work) for the formation?
Thanks again
