View Full Version : World and Local coordinates
AlexK 05-17-2004, 08:35 AM Hello again!
Another thing is bugging me. I have set up an armature set to control my character. The thing is, when I rotate let's say the hip and then try to move it, the coordinates point in the "wrong" direction because they are local. Now I tried to switch from "L" to "W" in the armature List View, which worked. I am able to move in the world axis, but I am also unable to move it per mouse button now, i.e. it moves in X and Z in Perspective View with all threee mouse buttons and to move in Y, I have to switch to Front or Side View. Is that a correct behaviour?

From the messiah docs:
Under Interface > Basic Interface > Basic Screen Features
Local/World Coordinates: When moving or rotating an item, using the left mouse button will move it in world coordinates; using the right mouse button will move it in local coordinates.
Move: Moves the view in the viewport (World View). Left-click and drag to move along X and Z. Right-click and drag to move along Y. Note: This feature is not available for Camera and Object views. Quick Key: Ctrl-Alt plus left mouse drag for X/Z, and right mouse drag for Y.
There's more information. So, you may want to peruse the docs yourself.

I know this section of the manual. That's where I looked first, but it doesn't work for me. Whenever I switch to world coordinates I can only move in two axis, X and Z. Y doesn't even work when I grab the Y handle of the edit sphere, only in Front view I am able to move in Y.

I don't have messiah in front of me ... but you can use the keyboard shortcuts to access XYZ ...
This is off the top of my head, but double check..
1 X translate
2 Y translate
3 Z translate
4 X rotate
5 Y rotate
6 Z rotate
7 X scale
8 X scale
9 Z scale
Make sure you click in the view port to activate it. Then click on 2, that should activate the Y axis ... then Right mouse click and drag anywhere on the screen to move along Y axis.

MarvinTMartian: I have messiah in front of me now and I can verify your findings - you're not crazy.
Left, Right and Front Views function as expected when translating an object along world or local coordinates. Perspective and Camera Views do not. I am unable to have the test object translate along a particular axes in Perspective or Camera View. It seems to translate in all directions randomly no matter which axis is selected. Oddly enough, the Pitch and Scale seem to work correctly.
It seems that one is restricted to the orthographic views to make these changes for now. :hmm:
Edit: I just had a brain storm - it may be possible to use Armatures to bypass this situation. I'll test it out.

I set up an Armature in order to:
(Click and Drag Icon)
Left mouse button = Y translate (local)
Middle mouse button = Y translate (world)
Right mouse button = Inactive
http://www.3ddmd.com/images/Messiah/Armature_Translate.jpg
Took me only seconds to set it up and the great thing about Armatures is that you don't have to activate the edit sphere by clicking on it first - The Armature Icon is always "on" and it's a lot less obtrusive. It can clean up your rig in a hurry - you can hide a lot of bones, Nulls, etc...
Alas, in this case, it seems that the Armature is exhibiting the same behaviour as the edit sphere. The Y translate (local) works -but the Y translate (world) does not.:hmm:

Hi Chikega!
I haven't been in for the last 16 hours, so I was unable to tell you that armatures don't work. This way I stumbled upon it.
But you have found out now anyway. :D
Maybe a bug to report to the Messiah-Team?
Thanks for your help, by the way.

maks: I was suspecting it might be a known bug - I thought I had heard something concerning it, but wasn't sure. Well, atleast, I got to experiment a little. :)
