It's been ages... and ages... and ages since I could paint last. Seriously. But now - this is the first image for my dark fairytale book, and the only one I'll publish on the web until the book is out, so it'll be a while before the next one :]

All done in Photoshop because I haven't installed Illustrator on my new computer... and I've looked at an insane amount of pictures of horses the past 24 hours. I don't think I ever want to see a horse again - please, don't make me look at more horses!

Mostly done for the sheer challenge of it - you know how there are some things one hardly ever paints because one is scared to paint them? Well, this is one of mine. I'm so glad it's done.

I'll stop prattling now - if there's anything you want to know, just ask. Any close-ups - just tell me :)

Crits and comments alike are appreciated - won't get around to any edits until in a few weeks though.

(accidentally posted this in the WIP forum first, I am SO sorry.

Holy....always enjoy your work, such talent...

I think you did exceptional well with the horse considering it was one of those "scared to paint" subject. No crits!!

[edit] there's an eeeeeerie feeling in the air...

A close up of the face and armour would be divine.

Will your book be published internationally?

Already commented your picture on DA :)
Great picture.
I realy like the motion blurs the armor is also great.
Anly little crit would be that the character seems like falling a bit in the direction of the viewer. and the foot behind the horse is drawn a bit high enhances that feeling (if that bllury shade is her foot).
But thats just my thoughts.
Bachground and overall colouring is realy very good :bounce:

Saw this on DA and came over here to post.

I love the murky, misty feel of the battlefield. It certainly makes the viewer get involved in the piece. Only crit: I do agree that the rider seems to have a bit too much weight on the near stirrup.

As was asked earlier, when is the book scheduled to go to press? Will there be an international release? Congratulations and good luck!

Everything you do you are successful at! Incredible image.
Love the background, love the foreground. The birds are subtle yet help enhance the image.

Love the detail in the horse's face and neck. You did a great job on the horse. I love horses - and this is as good as George Stubbs, Rosa Bonheur, or Gericault's artwork.

Great expression on the woman's face and armor, too. Really like the rusty metal texture detail on her spears. Whatever battle she is fighting, I want to be on her side.

When is your fairytale book coming out? I can't wait for your D'artiste book to come out too.

You're an exceptional artist!

Beautifull piece of work, as allways.
Stands up to for your Virgo perfeccionism.

Lovely work, again, filled with poetry.

Don't hate me for saying this, but you might have to look at more horses.

Anatomy: Rear leg closest to viewer, bone extending from hip to knee, should be one straight line, but yours appears arc'ed or jointed in the middle. You'll also want to round out the horse's flanks -- I believe that's the strongest leg muscle on the horse. Also, there's not enough room for the ankle and hoof before the leg meets the ground. Horse's neck looks a bit short.

Positions: If horse is walking (not galloping), one front hoof should be planted and the other raised. Also, the rider's leg is too straight. Her legs would need to spread wider to accommodate the girth of the horse and her knees would bend more, putting her in more of a seated position.

Nothing to crit on the background -- it's quiet and desolate and small birds on the ground are undisturbed by horse and rider. Are those vultures in the air searching for dead soldiers to dine on? Nice touch.

wow, not really sure what to say, i love it. you are extrmely talented. i love the colors and feel of the entire thing.

i would like to say that the riders foot seems.. well the best i can describe it as, off. it seems like the armor just ends at the thy and the shin was overlooked. you may have ment to not cover it, but it just doesnt seem right.

there truly is nothing else i can say about it. i love and and cant wait for more to come.

Nice, very nice & lovely and technically very good, as all your work

One minor crit: The fold between body/legs of the front leg of the horse looks too sharp to me :surprised

Enayla, this is absolutely awesome artwork! Your artwork is the kind that inspires me to go beyond what i think i can achieve. The touch of motion blur is subtle and effective, and I drool over the design elements. Colours are rich in atmosphere.

I can't wait to see your book when it's published. Good luck with it - though I don't think you'll be needing it :)

once again, awesome artwork!

Bumskee: why, thank you :] It’s always interesting to paint something for literary the first time – it freaked me out but now I’m over it. I think I’ll train a little more on horses later.

Leviron: I’ll supply you with close-ups as soon as I get back home :) I’m not at my computer at the moment. As for the publishing – oh, I’m not sure yet. It won’t be in Swedish, I know that for sure, so I’m pretty certain you’ll be able to get hold of it over the web. If nothing else, I fully intend to sell the book along with prints on my website next year.

Oljiosma: thank you :) I was a little nervous about the colouring – I’ve received some criticism for using very muted colours in some of my images, but for some reason I really like to paint that way. Glad to hear that someone other than me likes the moody, washed-out colouring.

OrcOYoyo: Thank you kindly :] I wholeheartedly agree on the position on the rider. This being the first time I painted something like this, I knew I was bound to mess it up a little. I’ll try to fix it, but I won’t be able to until in a few weeks.

Keight: Glad to hear that you’ve noticed that it’s a battlefield :] Not everyone does. As for the book – don’t expect it until at the earliest about this time next year. Thank you :]

Gryphon: Thankee :]

Yellowstone1: Wow, that’s quite the flattering compliment. Thank you very kindly :) As for the book – look at previous answers… I just don’t know for sure yet.

Spritemare: Thank you :)

AndresCm3: Thanks :D *bows*

Lula_assassina: thanks :] The perfectionism will break me one day, though – I just work too much on stuff, is all. I sometimes wish I was a little sloppier regarding my pictures.

Xgrave: aw <3

Ilikesoup: Thank you very kindly for the criticism :] Regarding the horse’s position – I can’t actually take all of the blame for that one. I had at least five different, separate images of horses in an almost exactly similar position, regarding the hooves and the legs and the position of the body. It being so common among all the references I looked up, I felt safe in painting the horse in that manner. As for the position of the rider – I know I messed that one up, and I’ll try to correct it at a later notice. I looked through a good amount of old paintings of knights and soldiers for the position and it’s not always so easy to get things right.

Cr0ss: Thanks :) No more pictures will be shown from the book ‘til it’s been published. There will be somewhere around 20-30 pictures in the book.

Da_rock21: Thanks :D I have to admit that I gave up on the foot. When I finished the painting, it was 10AM in the morning and I had been up all night. What mistakes I was aware of, I simply decided to ignore at that point. I’d spent so much time on the face of the horse and the armour of the rider that I completely lost track of time. I’ll see if I can fix the boot at a later notice :]

Francis: Thanks :] Yes, motion among other things. Love your latest piece, by the way!

Chain_jane: Thank you very kindly :)

Jawine: Thanks :D And I’ll see if I can fix that when I do my edits.

Snowrvn: Thank you so much :) I’m overjoyed to hear that I inspire someone that much.

Oh, and here's the closeup:

http://www.furiae.com/images/kzayhrezay-closeup.jpg

Still not full size, but the face isn't as detailed when viewed close as some of the faces I paint - mainly because I didn't feel it was necessary :] I hope this peek is enough, otherwise I'll be happy to post an even closer view.

I can’t actually take all of the blame for that one.

I just want to clarify, your horse's front hooves are correct for a galloping horse, but IMO a walking horse is more appropriate in this situation. The small birds in the foreground would have flown away and the rider would be much higher in the stirrups like a jockey if the horse were galloping. Plus, it works as a soldier slowly surveying the carnage of a battle as she rides through -- don't know if I misinterpreted your intent. :banghead:

It's a beautiful piece. Good luck with your upcoming book.

Great work!
Theres a painting at kalmar slott of a horse called Eldklipparen, if i dont remember wrong it is in about the same position. Think the problem with the riders leg would be solved if you just shorted the "stigbygel" a bit. (me and english terms...)
On the other hand, brave to draw a female rider, dont think you´ll fins much refferencematerial on that one :)

Nice going Enayla!

I really appreciate your courage to tackle a subject matter that one often avoids... a sure way to force yourself to develop as an artist!

I'm pretty new to digital painting, but I've been following your work for a while now. Very inspirational stuff! I'd love it if you could post a tutorial on how you achieve those rich textured fabrics in the costumes or a tutorial on how you paint faces/heads. (love the 'nose' tutorial on your website!)

All the best (yeah, and your cat too... I guess);)
