How best to light this scene.

It's to be a composite shot, a real man will enter after opening the door from behind a white background. Then he will procede to sit at his desk.

I've used 8 lights above at about 10% brightness and in the final shot (which has many more objects) it will use radiosity.

I tried volumetrics leaking through the window but it doesn't look to peachy. I was thinking more spot lights, but it ends up looking too busy.

Any suggestions?

It's a doctors office btw, so the idea is for it to be more clinical, clean, even an overbleed of white as long as it doesn't look to over contrasted.

Radiosity version;

So do you want a non-radiosity rig and a radiosity rig, or just radiosity. If the former you definitely need an up-light for the ceiling. I'd use a wide spot pointing straight up and include only the ceiling. For general illumination you might use a large area light over the room, excluding the ceiling. Maybe also a low-level ambient-only light (3-5% brightness) or a couple of low-level omnis. Even if you don't use volumetrics through the window you at least need to have a shadow-casting light coming through there--unless it's nighttime. You probably want to do the blown-out look of the window in AE or whatever compositing app you're using.

Thanks Adam

I am getting somewhere with this. I've simulated a small light-dome or light-cube in this case to make up for the lack of realism and to replace to radiosity.

I'll try the area light, it maybe what it's missing and i'll follow through with your tips and see how it feels.

Thanks again.

After following some advice it's looking better.

I've decided to keep radiosity out of the final render, because of the project deadline. Hopefully I've made up for it here;

Another quick question. Can you run photoshop fixes through after effects?

I've made some light changes but also some photoshop fixes, basically i'm wondering if after effects will support tweaking.

that's a huge room considering the distance between the desk and the bed.

the lightning is great, especially the last picture

what do you mean by 'tweaking'?
the colours? AE has most of the photoshop-filters as well to manipulate the hue, saturation (sp? whatever, can't remember the correct word), colour, etc. etc.
so yes, you can manipulate your picture or movie the same way as in PS... and even more ways

Why don't you do it in Photoshop ? Just save out your animation as individual frames, tiff, psd etc.

Create an action in Photoshop for your color correction etc, and after that batch process your images in Photoshop.

Also, make use of C4D's 'render in passes' feature ;)

That batch processing of multiple ideas def' sounds like my best bet for the final color alterations. Thanks for your tips..

It's finally done

I was going to recommend baking ambient occlusion into the walls, ceiling, and floor, but the CGTalk server crapped out on me. Anyway, it turned out nice.

Wonderful progress Inthecity! Do you plan to add some screen action to the PDA. You could add the image of the homepage of WebMD.Com or something like that to the PDA screen. Just a thought. :-)

You need a ground bounce light. And a ceiling bounce light. Also, with the bright light striking the wall with the cot a bounce light from that wall would make sense to try.

Overall the composition is nice. A little color in the lights could add some mood as well.

How can I get bounce without radiosity?
I don't have the time or patience for radiosity renders, it's already 12.38am and I have atleast 10 renders to do.

This has nothing to do with lighting but don't forget to add a distance falloff (there's a free plugin) for the reflections of the floor for the final shots, it'll increase realism dramatically.

The only way I know of simulating 'radiosity bounces' without using radiosity is to manually place some spot lights to get the secondary lighting. But I think you already know that, so maybe others have some better ideas.

Baking an ambient occlusion pass as AdamT suggested is worth a try. But you're a bit short of time, so maybe have a look at this, it might give you some ideas:

There are also more tutorials on cgarchitect about lighting, which are quite useful.

Yeah, i meant spots or distant lights, low intensity. May not even need it to cast a shadow or a specular. Just something to add some ambiant lighting so the light is a little more uniform. The objects on teh desk are a bit dark.

There seems to be a shadow missing from the right side of the desk, or perhaps the bias is off, looks like the right side is floating.

That aside, looking great!

Cheers,
Jonathan.
