somehow my last post got erased (maybe the hackattack on cgtalk)

so.
how do i get a model and its animation from maya to md2 format ?

some guys in here told me the .obj file doesn´t contain animation data.

so how in the world do game studios work with maya then
only modelling ??

please help

I don't think there is a plugin for maya that exports to the md2 format. It's a pretty outdated file format and isn't used nowadays.. that leads me to the second question..

Maya animators doesn't save there scenes in .obj they save it in .mb which can contain animation data. Besides md2 isn't standard.. there are plenty of other ways of getting animation into games.

When I was juggling with md2 some time ago (I was using max at the time) there were only plugins for max and LW that exported to md2.

can i make a detour ?

what gamefiles can maya export to ?

maybe i can then open it with milkshape or quick3d and save to md2

i just checked deep exploration (file converter and stuff) it opens md2 and .mb (maya binary) but it cant save to md2
at least i didn´t find anything

The simple answer is that game studios don't use md2s. That's why they use Maya. Md2 hasn't been a good format since Quake2.

If your game programmers are dead-set on using md2, convince them to make an exporter or importer, or convince them to use a better model format, like .x

unfortunately not really an option
they are already pretty far and its a simple game

i did find a way though
maya-3ds-milkshape-md2

well the problem now is that this damn 3ds exporter wont load with maya 5
on the alias download page it says: works with maya 4.5+
the plus standing for later versions

the error message:Error: Plug-in, "3dsImport" was compiled against too old a version of the Maya API and is thus incompatible with the current Maya version. (3dsImport)

can anybody help me with that ?
or another way to get a model with animation to md2 format ?

Call up Alias about it. They'll give you some tech support right over the phone as long as you have your product ID.

i got news :-)

i now have a .x file (thanks to deep exploration)
the animation and everything works fine
but if i convert it to md2 with quick3d animation and everything is gone

could it be quick3d doesn´t support animations ?
it does weired things to my model

is there another program supporting .x and md2 ?
milkshape unfortunately doesn´t open .x

the funny thing is deepexploration can open md2 but i didn´t find a way to export it

so now i installed the bonustools for maya 5

i now have the 3ds importer working
but if i go to export all then i cant switch to 3ds

i also installed 4.5 and checked with the 3ds import plugin i downloaded from the alias site
it says it can import AND export
but the same here
i cant change to 3ds in the export all options

any suggestions ?
