Hey peeps,

A few months ago i started modeling a yacht and worked on it intesively for i dunno... 2 days ? as i was trying out modeling techniques and getting to know maya.
I haven't been working on it ever since, and actually i would like to finish the model.... because i LOVE Yachts !

After viewing the model again, i wondered if Poly modeling is the best method for this type of job... i know Sub-D's are very good in beautiful lines, but i wanted to have something 'faster'.

So my question is... is it better to work on it polygon style and then converting it to nurbs ?
Or should i start of from scratch and do it in sub-d this time ?

What i want, is to create realism...and i am willing to build from scratch :) (only if neccessary ofcourse :) )

here's a pic of what i have right now...

it aint much, but you can see it's polygon and that i was starting to get-to-know maya :) (which i also love working with)

for me it would be no question to take nurbs. such things like cars etc. are best modeled with nurbs ones.

just my opinion, don't flog me guys :)

I personally think that ships are ideal for nurbs

So it's better to continue building the boat in poly and then converting it to nurbs ?

or just building it out of nurbs from scratch ?

build it from scratch, build it from scratch :D

there may be a new function in maya4.5 but i can't really believe that it works really well. it may work that it builds the surface in nurbs patches, but are the patches good ?? i don't think so

NURBS is here the best way - with poly u have not the precise control over the shape - when u smooth ure model the the new mesh is a interpolation of the proxy mesh and far from precise
but i think a mix of both is the best way - u can model in NURBS and convert it to poly to add details

Ok thanks....

p.s hmmm.... a little question

anyone have a nurbs tutorial on how to build the basis of a yacht ? :) haha

I don't know where to begin... do i use curves or with nurbs primatives ?

i'd start with some outline curves and a profile and then birail it to get the body of the yacht

you can grab ideas from thompsons car modeling tutorial
