Hi all, think i've been a lurker too long now and just had to jump in and join the challenge.
So better Late than never,
Although there's a bullish head on this beast, I'll definately change that when I start the modeling.
Any crits welcome.:)

Nice concept!
Any start on the modelling yet? I presume that carriage on the top is for a character?

Thanks Paddy, yeah if i get time I might try a simple character rider later depends how much time I have.
OK quick blocking out started,
I'll definately need more reference for the muscles before I end up modeling myself into a mess of bulges dodgy edge loops.

heres an update, got my basic shape worked out.
still gonna alienise it later though.

Those muscles definitely start taking shape, looks good even in low-poly! Agree about the need to alienize it more though, its not hellishly original until now, but maybe you can come up with some really weird twist for this BoB. :)

Thanks Gollum, Yeah i've stuck to the bullish look while i was getting the muscles in order.
and now ive got this dopey head which I like

thinks i'm gonna do:
change the hooves to more dinosaur like feet.
alter the gait slightly to accomidate this
freak it out a little by adding a lot of horns, plate like appendages
and a tail of sorts
try and harmonise all these aspects
and then start on the leather bindings

heres a quick update.

Hey Davorell, cool concept ya got there. I know you said you want to change the head so it doesn't look so Ox-like, but I really like what you have so far. I don't see anyreason why the beast of burden can be modeled after a real beast of burden ;).
I think it would be really cool to see a real animal in this contest. it seems like everyone else is making a fantasy-based beast. I think yours might stand out more if you go realistic instead.

Great work on the modeling so far. It looks pretty solid, and all the proportions look in order. Great work so far!

that head looks much better than the bullish one. but it would be helpfull if we could also see a smoothed version.

Cheers guys,
Sorry Zro, Ive started down the fantasy road, but i have kept a copy of the bull state, mabey for future use (I did like the proportions myself)

I've started to beef this guy up a fair bit and threw in a few quick horns as an idea for freaking him out a bit.
I kind of intend to make him more scaly and dinosaur like,
as i do hope to texture him eventually.
I'm thinking diplo diplo-docus type scales and smaller horned areas along the stomach...
any ideas guy?
I've never done a Dinosaur myself, so it should be a good learning experience. Ive already learned lots from the muscle studies. I got a fair few rodeo pics off the net which started me down the bull road.

its a bit weird, that i started with a nice peacefull looking burden
and now im thinking the burdens gonna have to be beefed up a lot aswell.
any crits, ideas would be welcome

Personnally i prefered your first concept sketch, and your modeling start looks perfect ! :) Anyway maybe even with corns, it will be great i'm sure ! Keep going ! :bounce:

Well the first thing that comes to mind that I think you'll need if your going down the dino road is a long straight stiff ... tail (what'd ya think I was going to say you dirty minded perv ;) :p )

I'll see what I can come up with as far as dino reference for ya.

Cool! I like it.
Nice job on the back leg too, love the sense of strength it has.
I definitely think the tail needs some serious attention though. ;)
If you're gonna put horns in, you need to make sure the carriage can still sit on top, the way some of them are situated, that might be a little difficult.
Well cool though.

Well I've tried a few ideas for things on his back.
the horns and even a few stegasaurus type plates,
to no avail, so im now thinking
crocadile type ridges...
and mabey with a bit of luck, I can still keep the burden on his back
I've added a longer tail and it does suit,
And I've also tried a bit of mapping,
any crits guys?

Lookin' good!
Maybe some flab or more muscle on his chest? Some teeth and/or tusks? A harness or something? Maybe even a couple of pose tests?

Work boy, work! <Cracks whip>

well heres an update on my bob for now,
As he started out a mammal and then I thought reptilian
now im thinking with the mix I might try a hybrid...

any thoughts guys.
heres a temporary texture
im gonna unwrap the mesh and do a propper job on the bumps later

derwolpertinger
07-19-2002, 02:08 PM
this mix was a good idea!:buttrock: the only thing that annoys me a bit is that the bottom line of the head and the line of the mouth are parallel. i hope you understood what i mean, otherwise just ask me to explain it better! :)

Davorell

and here with a bit of head tweaking,
still got lots to do,
add a harness and some stapping,
decide on the burden, to be pulled or on his back

Davorell
07-19-2002, 02:18 PM
yeah, thanks derwolpertinger,
I'm finding it a bit annoying myself.
I've been playing around with the profile of the jawline a lot in the last hour or so. that second pic was an update on the jaw one before.
Im trying to avoid a dragon type look from the side and yet keep it mamilian like.

heres a profile shot of the head. it seems to take years off his age though

derwolpertinger
07-19-2002, 02:21 PM
yeah the secon pic already much better!:buttrock: i'd suggest that you stop changing it now cause it looks good like it is! :)

havent posted an update for a while,
where does the time go,
heres a few with the bump maps nearly sorted out

Hey man, great work so far. Here's a couple crits I'd suggest:
The horns look a bit weird right now. I'm not sure exactly what I'd do to them, but the look off right now.

The mouth I think stretches back too far. It's kind of like the mouth is too big for the head. The way you made it right now it almost gives the beast's head a human-like quality. I'd go and bring in the corners of the mouth foreward to around the line where the nose ends. That should make it look more beast-like.

Just my 2 cents man.

Davorell
07-24-2002, 10:54 PM
Thanks zro, I'm thinking the human quality is a result of the big ape like brows as well as the mouth
I havent actually tried shrinking the mouth that much .
I guess I fiqured at the start that I didn't really want a horsey, deer kind of mouth,
and so I just went with a big mouth instead.
Suppose i'll try it out now just before I put his mouth "bit"
( for the harness n' stuff) in.
and since im going to try it I suppose I'll the brows could be shrunk right down aswell.
Heres a photoshop, mock-up for the harness

Getting there...
Has anybody got any Ideas, advice for doing the Strapping/ harness?
Im using lofts in max4 at the moment

and another rear shot,

jeez, wish I had organised this month better as i didnt start the challenge untill
about the 15th and im also gonna miss out on the last week.

hey i love that harness you made there! only thing i can say is that you should make it more stable by connecting the strap around the neck and the one on the right of it. and maybe some straps hangin' down to make it look more leger(does this word exist at all?). so i wish yourself some nice holidays though!!! :D hope to see you again in the next challenge!:bounce:

That's a nice beast ya got there. The veins are a great finishing touch. Sorry you ran out of time but you can always come back and finalize it. Enjoy your vacation.

If you try you'll be a try'er.......

Thanks guys,
just login in from my Hols, in Lanzerote.
with a bit of luck I might make it back on sunday night to do a bit of finishing touches,
I think i might have a couple of hours as I think theres a five hour time diference between Ireland and EST :)
derwolpertinger, I think your right about the harness
to pull such a heavy weight he might need some kind of heavy neck or
shoulder brace like a plough horse, mabey
