View Full Version : Made the Switch! Graphics card?
colintheys 05-15-2004, 06:02 AM Hello everyone,
I'm very excited to have finally gone to Softimage! I am currently a Realsoft 3D user and want to get into character animation in more depth. I saw the XSI student pricing and basically just got it, immediately. :) My experiences with EXP have been very positive and I'm looking forward to reading the documentation when I get back from school.
However, my desktop's video card leaves a bit to be desired... it's a 32mb Matrox G450, which apparently isn't OpenGL accelerated. XSI yelled at me about it when I installed EXP, but worked anyway, so I went ahead and bought the program. I was wondering if anyone knows of any information I should investigate about the Matrox card and Softimage. There appears to be none on the Matrox forum and I haven't installed a program on my machine for a few years that didn't have issues with my card in some form or another, so I assume there must be some
Also, I've heard rumors that ATI cards have problems with XSI. When I eventually get the money to buy a new board, should I stick to Nvidia? pro boards are out of the question, so we're talking gforce or radeon here.
Thanks! I can't wait to get home and install this! *evil laugh*

Yes, traditionally, ATI cards have all had a hell of a time with XSI. Has something to do with ATI's lackluster OpenGL support or something.
With the new X800 out, that could change but who knows, since like nobody on this board probably has that card, since most dedicated CG artists go after the NVidia Quadro series, which is built for CG work.
If you do gaming also, however, then you could probably look at the later GeForce FX series cards from NVidia. Won't be as expensive as the new 6800, but give you enough performance and quality for all things, whether they'd be CG or games.
If you're all-CG, then Quadros would be the best, IIRC.
I use a cheap bog standard GF 5500Fx and it runs fine.
No slowdown.
I have a quadro fx500, and its sweet. Except for gaming where it sucks.

well, im with Geforce FX 5700 ultra, and its working with no problems ;)
my advice to you is to take Nvidia cad, because everythink is optimized for Nvidia, including games.!
good luck!

I have an FX5700 and it runs fine. The guys in college are running XSI on all kinds of mid range gaming cards ( GeForce4Ti's, GF3's etc ) with no problems that I've heard of.
I have been warned by several people to steer clear of Radeon cards though.

I just returned my ATI Radeon 9800 Pro today after 8 days of trying everything I could think of and find on the internet about getting ATIs to work with XSI.
I got a GeForce 5900FX and it works just as well with no problems right off the bat...
...and I got 30 bucks back because it was the cheaper.

Hey thanks for the fast replies. :) I think I will definately steer clear of ATI. I don't do too much gaming anyway. It'll probably be a little while before I can get a new card, but I'm looking at an FX5700 (maybe Ultra), cause it seems to be about in the middle of the price vs. performance range. Just got home today, so I'm uninstalling EXP now and preparing my poor little comp for the real deal. I'm thinking about giving my card a four year birthday gift to help it through this... :p
Thanks!

I would like to speak about my experience with ATI and softimage XSI.
I've got an ATI Radeon 9600Pro 256Mo and obvioulsy I experienced display problems with the catalyst drivers.
After a while I found a perfect solution, I downloaded and installed the FreeFireGL drivers which solved ALL the problems due to Catalyst drivers, because after all the only problem was the drivers, ATI's cards are very good I think.
So if you want for any reason buy an ATI card, you'll just have to install these drivers instead :
http://www.hardwarelab.ru/files/FreeFireGL_6343.exe
... and they work great for gaming too !
