This is for anyone who might be able to help me. I'm just starting to learn Maya, and I'm wondering if there is a way to customize the user interface.

thanks

In the display menu there are many options
to customize the UI,
theres also a row of options at the top of every view panel with
many options.

But seriously, you should read the Maya Essentials manual,
there are too many options to walk through on a message board.

well, what exactly are you trying to do?

Because, if you want to add buttons to your shelf, click on the shelf you want to add the button to, open the menu you want, click on the two little bars that are usually on top of the menu when you click on it(ex. when you click on the create menu right on top there are two little bars, click on it) move it so you can see the shelf. And menu with the two little bars can be "torn off" and moved around. hold down "ctrl+alt+shift" and click on the object you want on the shelf, and voila, the button will be sent instantly to the active shelf. If you need any more help just e-mail me or something.
