you have two options :
- either you delete the layer in layout (select it and press '-')
- or in modeler, open the layer pannel (ctrl+F5) and select the layer that you want to export in layout (there is a column with an eye symbol in the header - if there is a point in a raw, the corresponding layer will be exported, otherwise it will not).
These items of information are available in the manual. Please read it ;)

Alternativly in Layout selcet the layer you DONT want to apprear on render, bring up the object properties window go to render tab and active the "unseen by camera" button.
Again that one is in the manual.

Open the object properties panel/Render tab.
Check (unseen by Rays/unseen by camera/unseen by fog),
Uncheck (Self Shadow/Cast Shadow/Receive Shadow)
for the layer you don't want rendered.
thats it.

OR you could set dissolve to 100% in the object properties.
OR simply remove the items checkmark in the Scene Editor. This is my prefered way as it's easily accessible and gives you a good overview of all objects "renderability".
Thanks everyone,
thins is very helpful. I think that unexporting it to layout is what I am looking for, but it's great to have all these options and alternitives.
thanks again
