Hi guys and gals!
I spent a fruitless night last night trying to track down two things:

- Need to export from Maya to 3ds Max an object.
Searched around, ended up trying the maya2Alias export utility to get it as a DXF and then importing that, but it comes out all over the place :/
There is Movetools from Lambsoft that says it can export to .3ds , but its allso $1200 US !
Has anyone managed to move an object from Maya to Max?? (reason being, I want to Brazil render an orbit of a model for display purposes). Maya can import .3ds , but Max cant import .Mb or .Ma as far as I can tell :(
Any help??

- The project I am working on is planning on getting capture data from a Motion Analysis system (.HTR).
Dominatrix for Maya will import .HTR data, but I cannot find an Import utility for 3DS MAX that will!. The reason being, I want to manage my blends in Charactor Studio (MUCH better than Maya can do), but move the finalised data to Maya for integration into the scene/rigging.

If anyone has any experience with either of the above, I would be very greatfull for your help ... I wouldn't normally ask on a board like this, but I have spent hours searching with no results.

Many thanks :).

don't know, but I think 3ds can import .obj ?

you have to load the plugin (window /settings../ plugin manager)

Nice, good thought...there is an objexport.mll ...

not too sure what the Alias .OBJ will contain, but I will certainly give it a go.

Many thanks.

The OBJ exporter will contain the same info as a 3DS file, geometry UVs, texture assignments and simple material info. You can get a free obj importer at maxplugins.de.

Your toolpath sounds really goofy to me. Why are you using Maya at all for this project? Max has competent modeling tools, you are of the opinion that Max has superior animation tools (I think the truth is you are just more familiar with CS), and you also seem to think highly of Brazil. Where exactly does Maya become a must use piece of software in this mix? It sounds like you are making things hard on yourself for no reason.

Anyway, if the studio providing the capture data is using a MAC capture system they should be able to provide the data to you in any format. They should be able to give you HTR, BVH, Acclaim, BIP, or scene files for Max, Maya, XSI, Kaydara, whatever. It's part of the software for the capture system. If for some reason all you can get is HTR you can use Life Forms to convert the data to something more useable. It's only 300.00.

ahah!, a fair assesment!

The reasoning.

I am a Maya Learner, but am more comfortable using Max/CS.
Our Project is being realised in Maya.
Our director wanted a nice GI/Radiosity orbit render of one of the models (poly model'd in Maya).
As I own a personal copy of Max 4, and Brazil is free, I figured I'd simply (hah!) export the model to Max and throw out a quick GI render.

As for the Character animation tools, my downfall is a lack of knowledge as to what Maya offers in terms of motion blending (the Trax editor doesnt seem to do the right thing)..
It is likely to be a lack of knowledge on my part, but I wanted to look into the possibliltty of using the tools I understand better, just incase the standard Maya tools wern't up to the standards I want.

Many thanks for the advice regarding the MoCap data, I greatly appreciate it, and will certainly look into LifeForms (something I've read a bit about, but not seen).
