View Full Version : 5900 XT 256 or 5900 ULTRA 128?

Hey..

I cant decide on which one to get really..All this stuff confuses the hell out of me so somone please tell me which way to go.

I'll be using it mainly for 3d work and some gaming i guess. Thanks!

hi,

5900 xt is basically 5900U with smaller memory and core frequencies (390/700mhz vs. 450/850mhz) so the difference in performance is rather minor.
on the other hand, i guess that those additional 128mb of ram in case of 5900xt are gonna be useless unless you deal with huge textures...

ok, it all depends on the price. in most cases 5900xt is much cheaper than 5900U (i don't know what it looks like in case of the 256mb version of 5900xt...) so 5900xt is definately much more attractive in terms of price and at the same time is almost as fast as 5900U. if the difference in price is big i'd go for 5900xt for sure. besides you can easily mod your 5900xt to even 5950U by simply flashing its BIOS. it's very simple and as far as i know it works in all cases without any problems. so yeah, i'd buy 5900xt(plus you might make use of the additional 128 mb anyway, who knows).

Many pro applications cache geometry on the card for a significant performance win so 128 MB more memory on a card would not be useless aside from textures.
