View Full Version : ToonyEyes
Julez4001 05-05-2004, 01:41 AM Anybody got a techique for doing toony eyes as if they were deformed by lattices?
the way I do I using bones(effecting both lids and iris)
I have a limit on how crazy I can make thes eguys work bit looking for a new way to get some nice stretchy effects.

Hey Julian,
Well, we know LW and messiah don't have built in lattices. How about Maya? :)

No problem in Maya.
I just wanted a lw only solution ...messiah being a second pipeline issue.
Anybody use PointOven..whats ur opinion.
I have it and haven't even used it.

Sounds like the only approximate way to do the cartoony eye effect in LW/messiah is through endomorphs. The down side is that you kinda have to pre-plan how exagerated the effect would have to be. :)

Goto this link (LightwaveOZ)
http://www.lightwaveoz.org/scenes/files/ToonEyes.zip
uses a morph MTSE (DMorph in M:S) and bones to animate the expression/character in the eyes.
Bit different to the lattice way but effective :) Might need to use puppet sections if eyelids are part of head.

I think 2 bnone effects might work, 1 to rotate and the 1 to stretch using predeformed points.

there is an example of kind tonny eye, in the messiah yahoo group, its call oval_eye is under files, (i just look it 5 min ago, i still trying to understand how it works)

Thatys really nice.
My last eye rig I use Kretin's lw techique for aadding weird shape eyes to weird shaped characters but I still didn't get teh squash
and stretch like I wanted.
correction:
K. This eye is based on Kretins a little.
Notice that you can't squash on the Y at least not fromt op to bottom.
I'll play with it some more though.

julez, if you understand how it works
give me a hint, because i can riggit, and like to strech it in y axis
thanks

Yeah tahts teh problem the "Y" is useless to a point.
I'll show you my eye rig of my monkey character when I get to work.

I don't know whether that came across yet or not, but one of the major fun parts of the DollEyes is, that you can apply them to any geometry shape you want and it will solve towards a target (at least it should be fine...gotta check again and post some more examples! Thanx for reminding me!). That also means you can wildly animate them without having to worry about the iris itself (bad deformations and such won't happen)
However, with all the wacky highlight settings it is also rather easy to stylize them to infinity, not to mention that you can control the sclera(right?)(white of the eye) seperately and just put a gradient for toonshading on it. That's what the mask output is for to isolate it from the iris. Just use the mask on the opacity of your gradient for instance. I could add the option to make it even more toony by having a toon mode that allows fake highlights to be used.....curious....I felt like I've heard that before....anyway....stylization was the basic idea of the Eyes, much rather than realistic depictions.
On a side note, I'm pretty excited to see all the great things that pop up on the forum so quickly. Nice! Exciting! MORE!!!:bounce:

The white of the eyes is correctly referred to as the sclera - you got it Taron and you didn't even have to get a Master's of Science in Medical Illustration like I did. ;)
Yes there is pretty exciting stuff being shown here of late.

Check out the eyes on the fish rig (initial rig design - Ron Griswold, further developed by Marek Schneider) distriubuted with the new release.
It's not ideal yet, but the approach is fantastic for squashes and stretches. Does wonders to break up that 'cg-stiffness'.

Please write a tutorial or short video on Doll eyes.Sure its easy to change eye color but maybe something alongthe lines of how you came upw ith the idea and its implications.
How to use it for doing toony eyes. really you are the only person tha has a mastery of the shader nodes (ok, u too Lyle) in messiah.
However... if you want to use toony eyes for host 3d apps, you still have to resort to some other tactics.

this is what one is trying to accomplish ..however without lattice its no show.
Would lagpoints or Xform mixed something allow deformed sphere but ithth originalsphere rotations
