View Full Version : MR soft shadows in maya 6
Dan Wade 05-05-2004, 12:10 AM I heard that with MR 3.3 in Maya 6, there is a new shadow option similar to 'deep shadows' in Renderman, which simulate raytraced area light effects with shadowmaps? Has anyone found out about this and tried it out?
Cheers,
Dan.

I can't find anything new like that in Maya 6 I'm afraid.
There's a softness attribute that blurs/softens the whole shadow like an area light, but it doesn't get softer/sharper depending on the distance. That attribute was in Maya 5 too.
But, that's not to say that I just haven't found it yet.

Hmmm.
Yes well I just checked again and it's got tons of info about that in the Mental Ray docs but I can't find anything at all like that integrated into Maya,
Not on the lights, the Mental Ray shaders or the Render Globals.

I didnt see maya6 yet but it's interesting that this option is availble for us.
However it's not hard to simulate the soft shadows. I usualy use 4 spots with a d-map resolution of 256 and it it gives similar resluts like area lights without to pay all that rendering time.
