Ok in my Maya course I'm taking I've asked the instructors how I can import my own icons into Maya to customize my own toolbar. They ain't to sure. We're using sgi stations with Unix so bmps don't work for icons. The icons are xpm I believe. Anyway I was wondering if anyone knows any little programs that convert into xpm files or is there something I'm missing within Maya itself.
I'm not sure if I explained this right...:)

With Maya there should be a program ( in the /bin directory ) called imgcvt. It will convert from most formats to most other formats. For instance tga to xpm. you can get help at the command line or in the docs.

I just tried out imgcvt and it doesn't make xpm....use the imconvert.exe at the command prompt. imconvert -h gets you help on it. I just made two xpm from photoshop 24 bit tga and they are working fine in hypershade.

There is also xpm2bmp.exe in the maya\bin.

I use Photoshop CS2 to make my shelf icons and all thoes work on maya!
I think the xpm format is part of bmp somehow... Anyway try making your icons 32x32 using normal bmp export procedures on photoshop... here works!

the free multiplatform imageviewer xnview reads & saves xpm as well. and no, xpm has nothing to do with bmp. it's x-windows pixmap, a common format on unices.
