I have seen many ways to create hair with no plugins but what about short fur like on a lion or rat. What would be the best way to do that. The only thing I can think of is to manually create each hair but it has taken me about 2 hours just to line em up on the face doing it this way plus its eating up geometry like crazy. half of the face is already 4000 seperate lines each line at 64 tris.this isnt going to work anyone know another technique or free plugin?

I don't use Max, but I suppose that this should be made with some clone tool that uses as parameter the geometry points or the polygons normal.
In LW we have this plug that makes that really easy, maybe interest you to take it a look:

Hey man (I know you from Threedy with your inspirating Boxx-contest model ;) ),
I'm really interested in that problem, also. I still hope one day discreet itself will solve that problem, but I think that will not be soon :blush: .
I've searched on Maxplugins.de , and I found the following free plug's:
- Grass-O-Matic (http://www.maxplugins.de/r4_files/sisyphus/druid.zip)
- Hair (http://www.max3dstuff.com/max4/hair/hair.zip)
On scriptspot.com I've found the results on this (http://www.scriptspot.com/Main_Scripts.asp?Sort=Name&BrowseType=Search&SearchField=hair) page.
I've not been able yet to test them, but maybe they can solve your problem... Otherwis I would use displacement, diffuse, and transparancy textures to solve it...

if you are using max6 use paticel flow
