I hear lite-on is good stuff but I've never personally used one. However, I did get me an 8x one from NEC through www.newegg.com. I've never used anything so quiet before.... it's so quiet that when it burns or rips data, I literally can't hear it. The only sound is the sound of my case fans, which are cooler masters, just for your reference. I have had only 2 or 3 coasters so far out of the 30 some DVD's I've burned to archive data. Those coasters were from a program crash though in each case. Otherwise, the thing works great.

one of the best information resources available for opticals
(models, software, firmware, media tests ect) would be
http://club.cdfreaks.com
Hardware Reviews (http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/search/B/)
DVD Media Tests (http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=76)
CD Media Tests (http://club.cdfreaks.com/forumdisplay.php?forumid=77)

Id also recommend the Firmware Page (http://forum.firmware-flash.com/)

Its a good idea to look up not only that model, but what media and burning programs it works best with ;)

in general Lite On is a good brand, but knowing the little quirks of a specific model and media combination
(if any) can save alot of hassle
