View Full Version : Nonplanar Polys PROBLEM
paragonent 04-30-2004, 01:32 PM is there any way to get rid of nonplanar polys withoud subdiv?!
the problem is this:
i've generated a surface with PLOT2D function and i want to render with swift3dLW2 plugin to make a swf. the problems is that i want to have outlines of all the polys in the surface(quads) and the final render show me the surface with lots of triangles with outlines.
i think that this is because the polygons are nonplanar.
can anyone help me with that?!

Check to see if the polygons are non-planar by looking at the Polygon Statistics panel in modeler. If the polygons are in fact non-planar then you need to either triple them or start pushing points around until they are planar.

Is your model in Sub-Patch mode? Non planar polygons are caused by "quadrangular faces" or quads whose vertex coordinates are not the same. The triangles, or "Triangulation" keeps the polygons planar no matter how you move them. Although the poly count doubles, your model is completely planar and prevents rendering errors. You also in Layout have to set your rendering options to some edge mode.
A picture would be kind of helpful. I have never used PLOT2D function. How is it?

thanks guys...i knew that the polygons are nonplanar and indeed that's the problem...the issue was with swift3DLW2.
i have a 3d sirface generated with PLOT2D (the equation is in notepad 1 monitor wide:))))), and i was told to get a vector render of the sirface and with all the polys that made the surface outlined with black. for that you need to uncheck Smoothing and if the polys were planar it's ok, i'll get that effect(so cool effect:))))) but i have F***** nonplanar polys and the problem apears.
i've render it with LW render and it works just fine, i'll use vector render for something else. it's good that i understand how swift3dlw2 works
thanks guys good luck to you too!!!
