View Full Version : Tips to improve 9800 open gl performance in Lightwave?
Kwago 04-30-2004, 12:45 AM open gl support blows more than i imagined with this card when i was used to a GF4 4600 for years. are there any ways to boost open gl performance? i've heard of people loading firegl drivers on radeons.

I wouldn't say it blows, it's not just as good as nVidia's. There is a bunch of incompatability stuff though, but most of them are caused by LW itself like the cursor bug which you've might've seen if you're using the latest Catalysts. It's caused by wrong buffer rendering order.
I have no problem editing 50-100k polygon objects with my Radeon 9600 Pro so maybe you should define a bit what you're even trying to get out from your card.

Para,
I just installed an ATI Radeon 9600.
Can you describe more the cursor bug? Is that the bug in Modeller which leaves a trail w/ every mouse-click? Is there a known way to eliminate that?
Secondly, any known bugs in Layout? I notice that in Layout when I have many objects in a scene, the "Current Item" list (at the bottom of the screen) cannot scroll down. So if I am looking for an object far down the list, I have to choose it from the Scene Editor or simply hit the down arrow button many times.
Again, any solutions to these annoying problems?
Thanks Para.

well i was hoping for it's performance to be above what my 4600 could do, instead it's like half the frame rate, if that even... just horrible redraw... was like working on a stock mac g4 700 w/ a gf2 mx, just yucky
i wonder if it could be the drivers i'm using... they are the omega drivers ( http://www.omegacorner.com/ ) , but they are supposed to be better than normal cats... so i dunno :0

no, I 'd say blows is pretty accurate.
ATI and OpenGL just don't go together. stick with nVidia.

hehe yup
i just tried installing the regular cat 4.4's and opengl is still horrid >: /
i wish i could get SoftFireGL to work 8*[

Some people at my work are running 9800XT's with 3ds Max. They're experiencing issues as well. I think ATI just can't write decent GL drivers. They seem to care about gaming benchmarks and little else.

Is that why ATi's driver optimizations affect all games and nVidia on the other hand has about 60 spesified programs listed in their drivers for shader replacement etc? :D
Well anyways, ATi's OpenGL could be a lot better, I agree on that but for now I'll manage with what I have. D3D is better for almost anything anyway (I can already see the flames :D)
