I'm slightly confused on what you want to achieve... But as far as I know you can only add another Map channel by adding a UVW map (or UVW unwrap) modifier and setting the map channel to whatever you want.
But if I think about what you're trying to achieve, I think you can just give the selected faces a different material ID, which is right above the smooth groups section in "editable mesh/poly".

Thanks for the reply
yeah I think I will try that.
well I want my face and hands on another
texture map so I can paint the face and hands on another sheet .. then the one that is used by the body and arms.
Iam guessing that ID is what I want rather then Channles .
I have unwrap the face but want the face on another uv map?
does that help?

Yes. You're looking at different Material IDs...which you can assign at the mesh/poly level. You'll then want to apply the map to the proper matID using a UVW Map or Unwrap. Make sure you're using a multi-sub object material as well, and that the maps correspond to the proper material IDs.

Yeah I was suspecting that was what you were trying to achieve. Definately use Material ID's for that.
Just select the desired faces and give them all the appropriate Material ID's. Then in the UVW Unwrap modifier you can cycle through the material ID's in the Edit menu and put the mesh layout in the desired location.
After this you want to follow squeaky's advice.
Hope this has helped you.
