View Full Version : chains
Does anybody know a good way to make chains in maya? I can create the chain with the duplicate method.......but it's impossible to move the chain because you have to rotate every singe part...........
I'm sure there is a way, at least I hope so :)

that is pretty cool with dinamics
create the chain aply rigid bodies to all do a gravity field and constrain the first of the chain.. u can add fields and colision objects to control it.. i dunno about keys
tryed it with dynamics.......but if i have around 10 chain parts my computer need 10 hours to calculate one frame?!?
I thought on something like connect them to a curve and if I move the curve the chain parts move too? don't know if this is possible.......

you could use a skeleton (one bone for each segment) and then use an ik handle with the multichain solver. in the script editor type
createNode ikMCsolver;
then you will get the solver. he can swing in every direction not like the SC or RP Solver in one.
thx svenip, I think thats what I wanted
but not sure how to use it :)
I create my chain, then I created 20 joints
now the mcsolver from the first to the last chain bone?
then select all chain parts, the first bone and skin, and which bind method?
haven't done much yet with bones and IK :) at the moment I'm trying to rig my character.......without success :annoyed: ....but that will be my next post :)

no skinning needed. skinning is just for deforming surfaces. you just need to parent each seperate piece of the chain to it's joint. that's it. create the MC IK Chain from the first to the last joint and then you can move the IK Handle free.
ok the chain works now......it's nice but you cant really control the form of the chain, and thats the problem :hmm:
I need to be able to winding the chain around a cylinder (for example)
maybe I will try it without ik......but thats alot rotate work

then you can use the spline IK. it gives you greater control about it. but be aware it can also change the length of the curve and you need to be really carefull with that.
thx very much this works great
another question, is it possible to "cut" the ik spline into more control vertexes?

yep, you can draw your own control curve and then use this one for the ik spline. look into the options of the ik spline.

Maybe this tutorial would help?

See the How to animate chain link ... uhmmm link.
