Well, you've asked a really big question. There are about a million different ways of doing this stuff. For simple boxes try grabbing a screen shot of the object from an orthographic view and painting over that. Just make sure you crop the image correctly before applying it back to the object.
Also take a look in the max help files. You'll find they can be your best friend. Specifically look up the modifiers UVW Map, and UVW Unwrap.
Good luck.

Oops I guess I've entered this post in wrong topic.....I am sorry for that.
Well thanks mate....But I have just heard there is also another utility called "texporter"(I guess) That is also used for this purpose....? have u used it? Is it better than UVW Unwrap?

well ... UVW unwarp is the thing to do before u can use texporter!!
All texporter does .. is taking a shot for what u've worked out for painting it later in photoshop
here is a very useful link ...>>> On 3dtotal (http://www.3dtotal.com/ffa/tutorials/max/joanofarc/bases1.asp) ;)
Good luck with it .. its very useful i think for learning the basics of uvw & texporter as well !! :bounce:
