Previously, I had a somewhat failing drive used on my system @ work and when I attempted to upgrade the drivers for my Promise Ultra ATA100 TX2 controller card, the hard drive began making horrendous noises and ultimately failed. The drive is totally fried. I got a new drive to replace it but I forgot to use the updated drivers for the card when re-installing Windows. I'd like to use the newer driver because it fixes compatibility issues with Windows 2000 SP3, but what are the chances this could kill this new hard drive? Could it be a bad ATA controller that did it, the process of updating, or the drive?

Btw, I had really weird issues with bad blocks coming up with this drive already. I suspect that it is that compatibility problem that the driver addresses, but I'm not too sure. I'd like to just exchange the drive for another one, but we process a lot of work here in the office and the admins prefer that we just keep working @ it with what we got to maintain productivity.
