CGTalk - Maya smoothing question

Hi, I was a 3ds max 4 user and one feature I used a lot was smoothing groups to setup how the final surface would be like.

Now I'm using maya 4 and I'm wondering if there is anything like smoothing groups in it?

If so, could you tell me where I use it?
