View Full Version : Coloured Caustics in mental ray!
Hi again everyone. :wavey:
How do you create coloured caustics in mental ray for Maya? Can anyone point me to a URL which has a tutorial about this or perhaps tell me what I need to do to achieve this effect?
This animation and another project needs it:

Hi there,
You can get coloured caustics by applying a Mental Ray Photon Shader (eg, DGS_Material_Photon) to your object's Photon Shader slot, and then changing the diffuse and reflective colours of that shader.
You may also be able to do it my using the photonic attributes that are built into Maya's shaders. They are found under the Mental Ray rollout and accessed by un-ticking the "Derive from Maya" checkbox. Then playing around with those attributes.

Ahh I see, thank you very much!
I'm looking forward to trying that.

P.S
I have actually been to your site many times and I've been waiting for your coloured caustics-tutorial there. :) Thanks for many other good tips & tricks.

Hehe, because you named the thread with a similar name to my tutorial, I felt guilty that I hadn't written it yet, so I thought I'd better help you out.
I'm just so busy these days there's no time to write them!
Heh oh OK... Well, now you can just link to this thread - for now - and people will know how to create coloured caustics.
