View Full Version : PDF to PSD...is it possible with Photoshop
TurboNut 04-26-2004, 08:13 PM Well i know it is possible, but can Photoshop recognize the text elements from the image formats combined in the PDF itself?
My company has 400+ maps in PDF format..
Acrobat can of course recognize the text and search on the text.
But what we need is the PDF file to be PSD or PNG file formats. I cannot find out how to convert PDF to PSD and keep the vector type format. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot

I don't think PS does that, maybe Illustrator.
Sorry for not being able to help you :hmm:
Cheers,

i think PS's PDF import is just a rasteriser....ie you only get pixels...i may be wrong.
i seem to remember that certain PDF's could be reopened and edited if you opened them in the program that created them, but again im not 100% on this...
have you tried editing them with acrobat?
yes, i thought i was right...
just recieved a PDF, put it in illustrator CS which turned out it was originally created in....it opened as vector...so perhaps try that, it may open as vector and then you can import that into PS if you find the right originating app

Rasterizing is all PS is doing to it right now so i think your right.
I am downloading illustrator CS right now to give it a go.
thanks a lot

Well i thought it was gonna work but it didn't recognize the text as text. It made them vector polygons but not text. I think the problem lies in how there were made now. But thanks for all the help. I guess its OCR time......crap.

Why don't you open the pdf in acrobat and copy the text out? Unless the creator of the PDF converted the type into outlines (something you should always do to avoid dreaded font problems, unless it is a manual or something more than 5 pages long) The text is gone gone gone gone...
