View Full Version : What to do your UV mapping on?

Since most polygon modellers work on a proxy model and then smooth/connect it later on, which model do they lay out the UV's on?

Obviously there are less polys on the proxy so it would be much easier than the smoothed one. Just curious.

FYI, I am using Connect Poly Shape to stitch/smooth my model and it creates an ungodly amount of polys so I thought I'd ask this question.

Thanks

i tend to do it on the low poly one, as its a lot less confusing trying to remove the smears, the UVs should carry straight over.

I layout the base mesh of my models. Sometimes you get some stretching on the smoothed one. That's because smooth relaxes your vertices when dividing but doesn't relax the uvs, if I remember correctly.
Another reason for creating a clean base mesh with mostly quads, this way the results are more predictable.

I use cps too. Just stitch you model in the lowest resolution after completing it and reassign cps. Then uv layout the base mesh. I tend also to skin and blendshape only the base mesh, always keeping the high poly one only for rendering.
