View Full Version : Render Problem
Sean11 04-25-2004, 07:06 PM Hi all,
I've got some newbie questions for you. I've done a search but I can't find anything.
I'm used to rendering with 3ds Max where the render menu is very simple to understand.
I rendered a single jpeg of my character (1500 polys) using the maya software renderer. This works ok but it's not showing any shadows.
If I render the image using mental ray it dosen't work at all. The mayaRenderLog is full with error lines.
'API 0.0 error 301107: while defining object "polySurface54|polySurfaceShape53": index 5273 exceeds # of vectors (5273)'
Whats does this mean?
In max I usually just compress my animations into an avi. Is 'batch render' the only option for rendering in maya?
Thanks in advance.

Batch render is the way to render multiple frames in maya, so there for it will do raw avi sequences.
As for the shadows, you need to make a light and turn one of the shadow options on, be it depth map or raytracing.
On the poly issue, I am not totally sure. Sounds like mental ray has found something wrong with the polySurface54, shape53. Might want to take a closer look at that node.

So every animation has to be rendered raw in Maya? What if you wanted to play it back in quicktime etc?
I've noticed in the renderlog that I'm getting this error when I render with maya software as well as mentalray,
'***** Error: file: C:/Program Files/AliasWavefront/Maya5.0/scripts/startup/autoLoadPlugin.mel line 37: initializePlugin function failed (Mayatomr)
Error: line 1: initializePlugin function failed (Mayatomr)'
Does this help?
Edit: I just tried to render an image of a primitive sphere but it still dosen't work.

As far as I know, the raw avi is the default and only way to export a batch sequence. To encode an AVI to MOV, you will need quicktime pro.
That error sounds like your MayatoMR plugin is messed up or not loading properly. Check in the plugin manager.
But dont quote me :)

That first MR error message you gave sounds indicative of multiple UV sets. MR can't handle multiple UVs, so make sure to only have one UV set.
As for mtomr not initializing, just make sure you've set MR to load automatically at start in your plugin manager.
And you should probably render in multiple still frames, then convert to .mov or .avi later, with AFX or Premiere or something.

I had a look in the plugin manager and mayatomr is loaded. When I hit 'Render Current Frame' I get a message in the command feedback window that says '///mayatomr aborted'. Maya then crashed.
I just tried something I just read in another thread, render globals/ mental ray/ memory and performance/ memory limits/ physical memory and changed it to 800 instead of -1. This made maya crash again. When I reloaded it the physical limit was still -1 but mental ray worked when I rendered a sphere.
I loaded my scene with the 1500 poly mesh and tried to use mental ray but maya crashed.

Bonedaddy,
I just noticed your post.
I went into the UV set of my model. In the Relationship editor (UV centric UV linking) under the polyshape it says map 1 and UV set 1.
Under lambert5 it says color and file2. If I select Map1 and file2, the textures map onto my model correctly (as laid out in the texture editor).
How do you make sure your only using 1 UV set?

I went into hypershade and deleted all of the materials I'm not using (leaving the default ones) and deleted nodes in the hypergraph I didn't need.
Mental Ray works fine now.

I'm guessing that you accidentally had two different textures loaded on the same mesh. This can happen pretty easily as you just work through your stuff, and can be devilishly hard to track down. In general, it's good to keep your hypershade as clean as possible.
