Hi guys and girls !

I finaly rendered all frames for my Maserati 3200GT animation. Here is one of images wich I made suitable for desktop theme (on WEB you can download 1600*1200 version). If you have few minutes please visit my page for more shoots and I would realy like to hear comments on animation too. Animation is coded with DivX 3.11a so you can play with any divx instaled. It's cca~10MB long and last 1m 20s, sound included. It's not anything special - just blending few cameras to get nice reflection on car paint but
looks nice IMHO. Rendering all that frames (450*300 low AA with radiosity) took me about 20 days :). Fastest frame was rendered about 10 minutes and slowes 65 minutes. Moustly beacuse radiosity.

http://www.newtek.com/discus/messages/2/27355.jpg

here is direct link for animation (this is not linked to my pade beacuse I had too many visitors on my page what spemd yll my monthly bandwith in few hours :)
http://www.firedragon.com/~lwg3d/members/Lewis/Maserati_final_web.avi

Thanks for commnets and please took some time to download that animation and see (at least guys with fastest connections ;). I uploaded wiht 56K modem so that will took you just few minutes on DSL or so ;).

Thanks guys and you can see/dload animation now if you have time but please teake it easy "one at time" ;).

that is a very realistic render. Every time I see one of these, it makes me want to learn LW even more. Must get around to doing that.

So many of these great cars are put into a white room with just the car. Maby try some environment for your next render?

I would really like to see a higher quality AVI file. I only have 56K, but it would be worth the time.

Great work!

Yes stephen2002 I would also like to put this car in some realy nice enviromnet BUT i don't have time to model everything :). You need total 360degree enviromnet to achive that nice reflections on whole car (no cheating to put evniro just behing camera angle :)). But in present time i don't have time for such job because this is only my free time hoby. I'am searching some good company who will maybe offer me CGI job :). I work by night when I should spleep :) beacuse moust of day I'am not at home or I'am on my work.

Thanks for nice words.

Lewis, You have done an incredible job. As for a critique, the only question I can ask is if you modeled exactly to scale on everything. It isn't a big problem, but the disc brakes look too large. Are they really that big? I am not familiar with the specs on newer Maseratis. Its just that I used to work on cars and things like that will catch my eye. Sorry for sucking away all your bandwidth.
In my MAYA modeling class I'm taking, I'm going to show this to everyone, including my teacher. But Ill put it on a disc, so we dont have to go to your site and trash the place.

Thanks for the inspiration, heres the car I'm going to bulid over the next month.
I will probably need your help, and advice, as we are using polys also.

Lewis3D
07-16-2002, 12:17 AM
Juggernaut - that's good to know.

dmcgrath - I'am not sure are brae discs exactly that BIG because i can't see them on blueprints. I have many small reference images and FEW bigger but moustly from wierd camera angles (interesting angles). So that i can't tell you ist that 100% correct size but it look's to me that tey are pretty BIG :). Afterall this car go very fast so hee need good and big brakes ;).

BTW I can help you if you need help in modeling beacuse I wrote Interactive CAR Tutorial for modeling Ford Mustnag Cobra in LW But I belive that pretty big part can be applied to any good SW (like XSI, Maya,MAX, rhino C4d..).

And now you can download animation as many as you want beacuse now i redirected link for animation. My site is back online and bandwith is trippled than before :).

Thanks to LWGForums who offered me their (firedragon) server for animation so that my page won't be offline every 10 hours ;).
It isn't been problem in surfing to site or looking around my page, but when you get 554 downloads in 2 days on animation wich is 9.6MB then you have problems with bandwith.

Great model dude!

Shadows and highlights are definitively wrong, but those things need compositing skills to perfect anyways, so don't take it to your heart ;)

Nice model, again :)

P.S.
Where in Croatia are you? Getting a job in CG here is non-existent, if you get one, and you're lucky to get paid, you'll end up working on utmost boring underpaid stuff on which you have little or no control. Only 2 options are to either go abroad (which sux), or freelance for foreign suckers (which rox) ;)

Hi Andre !

I would show you my lights setup in scene but I didn't used any lights in this scene :). Everything is lit by HDRI and Radiosity :).

Surface on car have reflection setuped with gradients on incidence angle so that you can get that nice fresnel effect what real car paint have.

Ohh YOU'RE the guy who did the kick ass FreeLander....

You've got a real knack for autos..... not seeing anything wrong with the latest.

Only thing I would suggest (and it's minor), is obviously the flawless paint and driven snow white stage give the impression of brand-spanking-new... and that's cool. The part that bugs me just a little bit are the tires... they're pretty good, but the tread seems a little too perfect, and new tires have 'needles' on them...

I think with those that tire would fit the realism that you've achieved with the rest of the car...

Overall... Great work!

Lewis,
I'm an old guy who grew up in the 50's and loved cars and everything about styling and design. Your work is very, very good and way beyond acceptable! I agree about the tires but thats really a small thing! I also agree about possibly adding a scene! I totaly understand about the time and effort required to add such complexity. However, it would make the difference when going for a carrer in the long run...... Just my opinion.

Ever thought about collaborating? There are tons of people out there, I would think, that might be willing to help model the scene in order to build a Kick Ass animation that would catch attention. I'm not on that level yet or I would volunteer. I have just started learning digital 3D art. You have to know that most of the big work done commercially today is not by one person, but mainly a collaboration. I think that's what makes the internet and this kind of forum such a great tool!

Take away the tree and car and the quality of scene work done by Sytron shown towards the top of this forum would be a possible candidate. Give it a thought...............

In any case you have the talent just keep working and be prepared to work.........cause you can get paid to do this!!!!

Cheers!
john

Thank you very much :).

Acctualy i know all that about BIG projects and that many people works like Team to produce commercials and similar projects for quite time. I made that Maserati by myself for pure practice and pleasure because i love cars (i work with them a lot in real life).

BTW i can compose that Car in some real nature environment because i have all equipment (i work on TV station so i can ask my friends camera man to shoot me some streets and similar stuff). I can compose that on computers in my work where we have all goodies like SW and HW tools (Matrox DigiMix, Pinnacle DV 500, Miro DC30, DPS Reality and much more). But i don't have time for all that becasue this is just my hobby for now. I spend much of my time on my job and whe i get home i model something and my day is almoust over :). Ten sometimes i go to drive my real car (I can't be all the time in closed space in front of monitor ;)).

But i appreciate your help very much and it's realy great to have such great guys on CGI forums :).

I think what makes this car model look so nice is the composition and simplicity of the layout. The lighting gives it that 'apple mac' quality and expensive feeling that is so suited to that car model. Also your wireframe looks perfect, it looks like you make lots of adjustments to achieve this, I can't see any unnecesary geometry here, tatally echonomic, you would prove to be very valuable to a production company!

superb stuff!

p.s. may I add that I think there should be a fluffy pink bunny rabbit sitting in the drivers seat, just to add to the quality and appeal?

Lewis3D
08-30-2002, 03:53 AM
LOL - EighthDecay, oyu must be careful in future ;).

Marley - i just used HDRI image for ighting whole scene (no lights) with radiosity so that HDRI is also reflected on car paint wich uses gradient on reflecting channel. Gradient is set to incidence angle to achive fresnel look like on real car paint :).

Elliotjnewman - thank you very much, also that bunny idea is cool but now its' too late ;).

what system r you running to get 20day render period ?

Lewis3D
09-01-2002, 11:47 PM
Thanks say-g :)

I rendered on old Celeron 1Ghz clocked to 1.3GHz but radiosity is "thing" why is last soo long ;). 23 hours daily during 20 days. I wanted radiosity but without radiosity it would be finsihed in 2 days. 2100 frames and fastest frame 10 minutes, slowest 65 minutes (reflections on headlights are killer 'coz lights bouncing of them and passing through glass in front of them and so on :)).

derelict - LOL i dodn't thinked of that "way" ;). So what teaching do you need ?? modeling ? rendering ??

Hehe, reallly nothing special :). Just normal reflective car paint and only thing wat gives it "real" look are incidence angle gradient on Reflective channel - IMHO. Also everything is lit by HDRI image so that environment get that "moody" look :).
