I have been asked to create the cover for a vikings novel.
I begun making some rough sketches until finding the idea they liked, and here it is.

A rough of the coast, some vikings, the lead character: IVAN, and here it goes.
Ah, well, for the background I'm using a photo the client wanted to be part of the composition. I stil have to paint over it.
It is still a sketch, but I see better where I'm going to.

Working more on the ship. This time I have printed the PS sketch, to work the details by pencil, and re scanned it.

Here (http://www.grafisktforum.org/showthread.php?postid=208756#post208756) are some pictures on icelandic nature if they are heading back home (cause we all know that icelanders where the only true vikings ;p )

Great start, keep it up!

Varius: Yeah, true.

Problem is time. I must finish the whole thing tomorrow, and I must go on with so many things left, that I will only worry about that when I see clearly I still got time for it.

Thanks any way. Crits are very welcome.

Alice: thanks for the references
perfecti: I have no answer for you. I haven't read the whole novel, but some parts with descriptions. About the color, I'll begin with it when I finish with the pencils.

Well, this is the composition with the detailed ship and Ivan.

very accurate referencing :D Im not too covinced on some of the directions those folds are going... but then again, you probably referenced them (just mentioning them since they stuck out to me)
The piece has lots of promise though

Xav: well, you are right about the folds, I must check them; and not, they are not referenced.

Next update, the sky. Now I must paint over the mountains as they are still the reference photo.

Hello, Coolblueman:
First of all, thanx for your feedback on my challenge.
I now find you are working on a project, and I feel I must collaborate, as far as I can... As I told you before, I think the body of Ivan should be shorter, so the waist could be upper, and, in that way, you'll get longer legs, wich would make it more interesting, IMO. Also take care of the lenght of his arms. (But I know you know it...) My only advice on the colour part is the big mountain far away. I think it shoud work OK on a more reddish colour, more than in the blue hue it actually has. (This is just becouse the sky is so pinkish and red and orange, that this blue is not believable: just select the blue mountain and turn the hue until you find it is correct; I've tried it, and it works!)
You have a nice challenge with water! Take it easy, and wish 3D could help you.
On the other hand, you've made a nice work with composition and perspective, as well as the colour scheme of sky is nice.
Goooood luck, CoolBlueMan!!!!

After some hours, this is the next update.

hdri: thanks for all your comments. And I think you are right about the mountain color, but (I don't why) the client is in love with that color and doesn't want me to change it. Anyway, tomorrow I will tell him again.

And yes, the water is 3D. As I have no time, it was the fastest way to go on.

Thanks again.

HI there,

after some days in which I couldn't get time to work on this project, I come back.
And I must finish the work within this weekend, so any help will be apreciated.
Here you can see I advanced with the colouring of the ship, though it is not finished yet.

wow CoolBlueMan, this is starting to become really really nice! Great Job!
I agree on the anatomy problems hdri described...If you could fix those, then this work could become very beautiful!
Good luck!

P.S. are you going to add waves where the boat cuts the water? (I don't really know how to explain myself better in English about what I mean...hope its clear ;p )

shehrevar: thanks for your comments. I will try to work on those anatomy problems, and yes, I will add those waves, as soon as I finish with the boy.

Hi guys,

This is a snapshot of the color of Ivan, as I am working on it at the moment. It is still a WIP.

Additionally, before colouring, I modified arms, legs, head and folds, as you all guys suggested. Thanks for everything.

Man, I wish I'd seen this thread sooner

Being an Icelander myself I'm just going to be obnoxious and declare myself a Viking expert just like that :)

The first thing that struck me was Ivans hair, there's no such thing as a blackhaired Viking.
And unless he's raiding a Scottish village those towers shouldn't be there, since you can't finde any forts in that kind of landscape (unless maby in Scotland)

That is all I have to say about the design.
Hope this all wnet well for you
