View Full Version : Help with Smoke and particle Rendering
ThatBlack1 04-23-2004, 12:04 AM I'm trying to make a dust cloud explosion. Its coming out ok in theory but when I render a frame the clouds are not as thick as I want them to be (Like Massive dust around teh place thick). Also it only seems to render in Maya Hardware, and not in Maya Software. Is this the norm or will I be screwed in that?
Thanks for your help.

Are you using sprites? Sprites work well for dust. With a bit of scripting and tweaks they look great, even for heavy dust.
For very very thick clouds like a volcanic ash cloud pouring out of a volcano, you're kinda out of luck. You would need a nice ray marching renderer and good volume particles. You can't really do that in maya now (with maya's software renderer - perhaps in Mental Ray, but I"m stuck in 4.5 at the moment and can't try that (it's a bit limiting in this version))
I'm not sure there are any great web tutorials, but I got the "Learning Particles" dvd from the alias site and it covered this exact thing very well.
Good luck!
Feel free to ask me anything...
