For 5 min sketches those look great. I like the design of your BoB. I imagine this thing as big as a brontosaurus, is that right?

This challenge's rules say that any hair/fur has to be done in actual geometry. I tried to do some hair in geometry and it was bogging down my system because I had to make so many cones for it to look good. So I'd recomend unless you have somesort of geometry-based hair plugin I'd stay away from it.
Beutifull sketches. They all look fantastic.
ilasolomon
07-15-2002, 08:02 PM
well, i'm still drawing....hmmm...
thank you erilaz, you are so kind...but, none of them is good enough:
ilasolomon
07-15-2002, 08:06 PM
ok, i'm satiesfied with none of them, i think i must stick with
my sense of FANTASY!....like this one, i like it more than others!

I like your choice...very comical BOB! are you using Mirai? I know you just started but mabe make the back plates separate objects with folds of skin around them...instead of the same mesh... like below...
Oh and by the way...very nice concept sketches all around!
ilasolomon
07-16-2002, 10:06 PM
Bezerker75, hi :)
thanx for the comments, maybe in modeling progress i change
them, it gives more details to overall looking, but it depends
on the final style.
i use 3dsmax ... i'v not mirai, i like nendo very much, but
unfortunatley some configs couldn't be changed, the viewport arc
rotatation is reverse of the max' also we can't change or modify
the shortcuts. :annoyed: (if nendo has wings3d's abilities!...)
& now more update: needs crits & comments
You know when something is so cute that you just grin at it... :D
Look at his little face! Look! - There isn't a creature in the world that wouldn't go "aaaaawwwwww" facing this fella.
As for the toes - I'd say that more is better, but I'd personally stick to the original 'one toed' shape, maybe just split it in two/three (but the same overall shape).
Coming along nicely! ;)
ilasolomon
07-16-2002, 10:41 PM
thanx AJ...i'll try!
ilasolomon
07-16-2002, 11:21 PM
hmmm...
???
not sure about the plates
I would do it so: where the plate will be extrude the face, then extrude again but with no translation, only scale it down a bit, and then extrude again until you have your shape....with this way it looks more like an seperate object, but is still smooth
but maybe thats only my way :)
very good character by the way :)
I like the front hoof the best....

Wow Ila, that is friggin fantastic. I think it's kind of funny how so many of yor skecthces were hard and realistic. then the model you decide to go with turns out soft and cartoonish. It's amazing how things work out huh? :D
Well anyway, I think you're doing an amazing job and those pre-vis renders look really cool.
ilasolomon
07-17-2002, 05:40 PM

I really love the style. My only crit (and it's hard to tell with the wireframe) is to maybe crease up the dent in that spade a bit more. Looks like its been done over with a blow torch and smoothed out the chinks!
Great work. Is the three nostrils some psychic "third eye" type of thing?

07-18-2002, 11:57 PM
holy smokes you're cookin! how do you model so fast??? i'm goin at a snail's pace now.....
seems like your props are higher rez than your beast? :) nice work
ilasolomon
07-19-2002, 08:53 AM
:) haha Steve thanx, i modeled them using polymesh in
3dsmax...
mattman, i took it easy! :) yes they modeled very fast
maybe they look more detailed than the beast but the beast
took 1, 2 days to complete & all the props about 5, 6 hours!
BTW polymodeling in max really is a fast way with help of
MESHTOOLS script tools i think.

Makes me wanna go and model something cute. It's so nice to see something done like that, very unique, very stylish, very distinctive and very well done. It's hard to know when to stop adding detail sometimes, I think you've got it right in this though.

ilooshka,
You always make me jealous :insane:
Your models are excellent, and are great from both from technical and artistic points of view.
You rock, as always.
The only thing that I can say is, your beast might have a balancing problem, and fall on his nose once in a while!:) If the back legs were a little shorter, or the Head a little smaller or shorter, he might walk with more ease;) I understand that it's a cartoon character, so everything's possible. You should probably keep it as it is.
Your only problem is: you should practice QUAKE more, so you don't get beaten by me all the time! :scream: (how about some Medal of Honor?)

Virtuoso thanx a lot pal :)
u see i use VRAY for landscape coz it's fast but i use brazil for
more quality (for example, that human character)
for the final rendering i think i will go for VRAY for it's fabulous
fast GI rendering engine, i wish i could use brazil!
- brazil demo= slow, limited to 1k size, noisy)
- vray demo= fast, no limit, render 4k image very fast, no noticable
noises, but uncutable watermarks(!!), (this is aweful):annoyed:

Are you not kidding with us? Making clay models and claiming them to be CG?
I am in awe of the organic feel of the surfaces of your models. Are you going over everything by hand? Or is it some kind of displacement?
It is the first time I use this guy:  , you do deserve it.
Have you considered to give us a view down a street or ally? Now it really looks like a set. That is good, if that was your intention. But would it not give more depth if we could look and see a few more layers of houses in the background?
WOW
ilasolomon
08-02-2002, 10:28 PM
Fetus23 :) thank you, maybe i find a story for that!
fellah, you know yours is one of my favorites! we have a
common sense in comic & cartoon! :) about dof, i'll try that.
Mikael P. thank u pal, u r so kind, i did all stuff with poly +
meshsmooth, no displace map used, i used noise modifier on
some models for clay looking...& every thing is pure polymesh!
well, it is not a real set, just 2 rows of rooms in left & front...
i'm affraid it's against the rules if i make a complex env. set!
anyway, this is the final pic, i think, the original pic is 1536x864

I said it before and I'll say it again. Also I really love your use of DOF. I think this is one of the few pieces that I've seen where DOF actually works in the scene. I like the new colors, I can't tell for sure what you did to them, but they look even better than before.

thank you Virtuoso :)
rok, thanks a lot, the photo is a daguerreotype that has
been taken in 1899, somewhere in south-east of el Poupea,
taken by a tourist who was in a trip there, his name was
sergeant major jerry cournelius! (©jean 'moebius' giraud)...

ila,
This is absolutely amazing stuff. You just keep outdoing yourself, and that's what I love about your stuff.
Excellent work.
BTW, how did you get that CLAY look for your models? did you manually manipulated the polygons, or is it a secret?;)
Keep rockin'

Hum... Sorry for this post but... I though that this challenge set its main topic about the Beast and so... Yes you've made a very beautifull scene and its burden has a lovely look! But... The beast don't really has aspect of your sketch... Oh, I'm so sorry! It was a so beautifull sketch and you've done a cool Beast but I think there's a lack of details on it...
Could you give him something more... amazing? :hmm:
But my congratulations for the scene's ambiance! That's great colors! :buttrock:

:) thanx sampixelipulator!
some parts: noise modifier, some manually...no secret!
just order me to send you the whole scene, boss!
I though that this challenge set its main topic about the Beast and so...
hmmm, the assignment says Beast + Borden, i think the
challenge has 2 parts, the beast, & the contraption...but i put
both of them in one scene, coz i think it has no meaning to
seperate them (i mean my set of beast of burden, not others)
anyway, i'm not insist to be judged!!!
& thanx for kind words! :)

I'm very happy to see that you get my little critism from the right side. You're a gentleman!:buttrock:
And I repeat : I'm only a coder so my piece of advice is very... on the floor level... :annoyed:
Good luck for the contest!

you are always welcome friend...& you said you are a coder?
hey i like men like you, without coders there was no CG at all!
i used to code in basic & assebmly, but it was a very long time
ago!!! :) (with my commodore 64, aah, what days we had, baby!)
Yeah me too.
ZX81, Vic20, C64 and finally Amstrad - which absolutely ruled graphics wise - 16 colors you see :buttrock: :buttrock:

You're right! We give a "real time life" to your work ;)
My favorite language is C/C++ (OGL,MFC,DX8 the two last suckz but I do with what I have :scream: ) but I know Delphi, SmallTalk Squeak, and some database script as SQL, PL/SQL. I'll don't say that I know GW-Basic because I code with it 15 years ago on my Beast of Burden : Amstrad 1512 (512Ko RAM, no HDD, 2 floppy 5'1/4 video card CGA with no RAM 4 colors! ;o)
Arf! I stop here! :)
See U soon
