Hoi Fleshies!

Wow seen some great work on this challenge forum, compliments to all of you.

Since none of you know me, and this is my first challenge I would like to introduce myself.
I am an Australian living in Holland. I was trained as an industrial designer and have worked for quite a few consultancies there as well as having my own studio in Melbourne. After comming to Europe in 1984:) I worked for Philips Corperate Industrial Design for 2 years as a product designer. I got interested in illustration and was blown away by the artistic quality I found here in Holland and managed to get a job as a commercial illustrator, which I did for 10 years (and still do as a freelancer).

Since I was a kid I have been drawing people and machines which distressed my father no end as science fiction was a relatively obscure genre in the 60's and only for geeks, of which I proudly count myself among that nummber. Anyhow I love the theme. This will be my first project in 3dMax as for the last 4 years I have been using a spline based program. Paralell to the challenge I am maddly doing all the tutorials on the cd because I know absolutly nothing about modelling, lighting, rendering and rigging in this app. This is an enjoyable process but cost absolutly oodles of time. Wish me luck!

The Concept

The 2 most difficult objects to visualise and model. The head and the hand. Thought I would go straight for the throat so to speak. I love fantasy and fiction that has a foot in the present, seems if you can relate somehow to the instance that it becomes more real. The mascot for my business card is 'robokop' (kop is Dutch for head). I wanted to totaly remodel the character in Max and make it far more extreme, so I came up with a quick scetch composition:'Machine Shop'.

http://www.art-werx.com/maxstuff/machineshop.jpg

The head is on a work bench contenplating the instrument of his demise, or salvation,.. a simple wrench. He might be there for repairs but is quite consious. I would like to work with contrasts, namely complex mechanics verses the symbolic simplicity of an archaic tool. I am not quite sure about the background so an ideas are really welcome.

Struggeling with the head at the moment as I want to build outwards. Will post a pic soon.

May the force be with us

I really liked your sketches and the ideas are great.

I think that the one with the guitar player machine is one of the best concepts I've seen in this contest so far.

I would really like to see it come to life!

Only one suggestion i could think of in this state: I would do a human hand instead of his robotic one. I've heard that one of the things that women find most sexy in males is male fingers playing a guitar... So I wouldn't pass on that.

But that's just my vision.

Good luck!

Thanx man.
It was a late idea but i think the humour content and message are clearer in the guitar one so I have decided to run with that :)

Thanx 4 th idea about the hand, I will make it human but chrome like the face cause I want a contrast with the nice warm wood of the guitar and western hat.

Face is almost finished, will post it tommorow.

Thanx 4 your reaction:thumbsup:

Thanx Guys!

Haven't done any poly modelling since the Raydream days, and that's about 8 years ago! Having to follow a tutorial for every aspect of this composition but I have a cd full of them, and there are heaps of them on the internet. This challenge is just what I needed to get my but into gear :)

However,...... looking around at the entries has been a huge eye opener. I have seen so many brilliant approaches in style and composition feels like I am sitting in a room full of geniuses which is very daunting.

The level of quality in this challenge is 'of the wall' never seen so much amazing stuff done in such a short time.

May the force be with you all

So the hed is on! I had a nice Ibanez accoustic with a cut away ready when a friend of mine saw it and suggested a dobro. I never held one of these but there are sone beautifull pics on the internet of them. Being a metal body that is usually heavily decrative it should be a pleasure to texture. Don't you just love it when others come up with great ideas LATE!

Thanx for your reaction! He he isn't that the great thing about CG, we can make the guitar sound like anything we want as I plan to animate the final model for a demo! :) However one horrible thing is that there were too many polys, as this is my first model in 3DMax I had no idea about keeping the count down. This is one important lesson I have learned from this challenge already.

Once again thanx for your reply,
Greetings Kanga.

Hey there again man, I told you I'm keeping an eye on your work...

Loved your progress, can't wait to see it done!

However you should keep in mind that the deadline is approaching pretty fast. I think you can make just in time, but you should try work a bit faster so you don't end up unsatisfied with your work...

I got to hurry too.

I'd like your feedback on my work too!

Nice bumping in your WIP from time to time.

Good luck man!

Howdy! Yeah I hit a major problem as this is my first polygon model for about 8 years I was modelling and modelling and at once my application stopped! TOO MANY POLYS:cry:

So I have been killing millions of them on backfacing objects as in the end I want to animate this model. I also didnt know about a smoothing technique that you could togle on and off which would be handy as I am only halfway and just rotating the model meant waiting for ages before it redrew. I have a pretty new computer and a great app but even adjusting the video drivers and defragmenting the hard disk didnt help as much as killing polys!

I visited your thread and noticed that you were dissapointed with the low ammount of reactions. I notice also that like me you are a new commer, you have 53 posts, and I 100. Most of these people have thousands of posts and they know each other for a long time. However when they post it is always poitive and helpfull. I could not imagine life without the 3DMax forum:). I guess we will have to wait till people get to know us and in the mean time help each other.

May the force be with you.

Hey there!

Once again thanx for your comment in my thread - 100% helpfull!!!

So I didn't quite understand - what smoothing techniq were you using?! Don't you use MeshSmooth? because that's what I do - put 1 or 2 iterations on the model at viewport, and maximum 3 at rendering... The MeshSmooth modifier does that-different iterations value for viewport and rendering - very usefull...

I didn't quite understand how you got to millions of vertices, I'd like to know, as it's really not usefull having this amount of polys, - efficiancy is one of the most important aspects of modeling.

My scene for example is less then 400,000 polys, and all the mechanical parts are really detailed (the too have MeshSmooth on them with atleast 1 interation)...

Anyway, I can't wait to see the whole thing come to life...

rock on :buttrock:

Virtuoso
05-31-2004, 11:47 PM
Kanga a suggestion in keeping things down as much as possible is to keep your iterations down to "1".it's best to give a bit more segments and then 1 iteration mesh-smooth,try avioding those 2 iteration meshsmooths.................Also think Instance copies as much as possible.........................Ok hope to see an update when possible..................:buttrock:

Kanga

Thanx guys!

Thanks for the comments and especially the hints about keeping polys down! I come from a spline based app and splines are smooth by nature while I find polys more exact, but that means making big mistakes in the beginning because i had no idea how far i could go.

Thoughtcriminal

Yes I use Meshsmooth but I should have only used it on the hands and the head because these have a skin modifier applied to them for posing with bones, the rest I should have used nurms smooth that I can toggel on and off, off for animating, on for render. I am learning that less is more, except by nature I love hundreds of parts. At this moment I am boning the hands so that has slowed me a bit :)

Virtuoso

Yeah stupidly I had things too large in the viewport (so I made them much smoother than they needed to be) and parts like the hat have three literations which I can't change. I take your tips very seriously, like you said,..... learning learning :)

BTW both your projects are comming along great!

You're probably working on your image right now... so do I...
Slept for 2 hours tonight, but it's worth every minute of it... yesterday I textured the body and head and it was a great workout for me as I rarely get to texture my models (don't have the energy)...

Anyway, I see you dropped the chrome idea for the skin's texture?

I like it just the way it is... are you going to add some background?

Anyway, my computer is dying on me... I go on to post editing...

See you!

Good luck my friend!

Yes I planned to do a skin texture from the begining since the very first comment you made:) HA I had to do a tutorial for making the texture just for that part.

Yes I put in a background and added more lighting. The texture on the guitar is all wrong as I wanted a metal finnish and it must shine. To get this on a flat surface with little reflectable objects in the foreground is very difficult. I changed the texture on the guitar to a bump and used a different shader, now its not looking too bad.

See you are going to post production, mee too, also visiting photoshop heaven:)

Look forward to seeing your final image, it has been a great journey. Thanx for your help!

Yeah I missed it. I went straight from the render milestone to upload final image and missed the fact that I needed to upload a .jpg I realised this 1 hour after the wip section closed down so I am bitting myself from here to Sunday. I guess I am out, rules are rules. Anyhow here is the .jpg after retouch.

What did I get out of it?

This challenge stretched me to the max:
Modelling: The head, hands and guitar are the most demanding things I ever had to model, and in an application where I had no idea (apart from some tutes) what I was doing. Poly reduction also became an issue half way though as my computer just gave up. I had millions of useless polys and a simple suggestion from Virtuoso solved that, he saved my butt.

Rigging: The model is fully rigged for animation, everything moves like it should and I wrote a commical blues nummber called 'Made of Steel' which I will use to make a demo and try get some animation work with.

Materials: Waddaya mean skin has more levels? I didn't know that! I posted the pic at other forums and got a critisism about the face texture. I happen to be a lucky owner of z_brush 2 which I haven't worked with yet, might be nice to try my hand at a realistic face texture there. Also the guitar doesnt reflect like it should, I think the guys over at the Max forum will know how to make it look like liquid steel,.... what those guys don't know isn't worth mentioning!

Apart from all that Lighting Rendering,.. etc etc.
A potential client wanted to see new work from me and we went over to his office and checked out the lighting tests I had posted on this thread. He was totally blown away! We are talking commission here which is always very serious stuff and this challenge took my work to a whole new level of quality of which I am intensly proud.

So you see I already win.
None the less I wish you guys the best in the comp.
Go get em Tigers!

Hey man!

Who knows, maybe the rules aren't so strict - after I've sent my final tiff I checked out my submittion on a different pc which had a brighter screen, and I found out that there's a composition problem in one of the darker parts of the image... so I checked the frequently asked questions thread and I found out that we're allowed to reload the final tiff and we're even allowed to change it to a certain degree (I'm not certain what...), so I re-uploaded it...

Anyway, I agree to everything you said about us all being the winners of this challange. I know that this image is my best work so far, and I only intend to get better and better (or become a film director, that is...).

I liked the final image, and I'm going to add it to my "challange entries directory" which I've made for comparison...

Have good luck in the future, and maybe see you in the next challange!
