Little WiP for the moment, a Scarab with a Nut on his back...
Here's a sample...

The may gonna be HUGE compared to the bug (2 times big)
I don't plan the bug to be a realistic / recogmizable one.

Here is the first work on the main body (missing head and tail, then legs)... everything in fact. ;)

Quick update...

Legs are juste copied. I'll fix that soon.

The main body still need some more spikes.

The ropes maintaining the nut will be screwed on the carapace. :)

Humm, i am doing a scarab too...
Have you seen it? Anyway, good job and keep the good work.

I like your scarab idea. Those legs look incredable. I think the main body need a bit of a change though. The top of the shell is very flat for a scarab, or any beatle IMO. I'd make it more rounded to beter show the beatle aspect of the BoB.

I think there are 3 "scarab" based BoB entries in this challenge, but each of them is quite different from the others. So I don't think there will be any confusion with the BoBs.

Thx.

You're right, the main body need some fix. Perhaps It is just because I'm working blind without any design. :)
I was wondering how to tie the "ropes" (or watherver you want) that hang the nut and decided to screw directly the fixation on the beast... Let's see.

BzW, the legs are instanced for the moment, but need to be diffrencied (last pair should be wider, less spikes on the middle ones, etc...)

I don't know if the head will respect some kind of "earth insect look alike" or the "from hollywood bad ass alien insect"... :)

Another bugs challenging ? Great !! I'll have a look right now. Love bugs (anywhere but in my kitchen)...

Here are some more adds... Posing isn't def for the moment.
I still need to reposition the little spikes (body and Legs).

Yeah, head is coming.

Any comments plz ? :)

omg, this one reminds me of a tick and not of a scarab. :surprised
And I goddamn hate them bloody ticks, have to pick em of my cat from time to time.

erm...

Anyway, the legs are looking killer, nice detail :)

Biohazard
07-16-2002, 12:34 AM
Argh, ticks. ;)
Yep, for the moment, a mix between a scarab and a sea crab... (but a tick would be great for mouth details)

hey, great updates! I would put the head below the main body, and bulk the averall scarab.. especially the back, to make him more powerfull like oh and you sould add another little segment on the legs at jonction with the body, going down...

Biohazard
07-16-2002, 07:42 PM
Thx Pascal.

Perhaps more like this...?

Don't like the head for the moment. A more simple shape might fit ?

That's quite hard to put an expression on this face from hell... ;)

Still hesitating between a coconut and an EggBot for the load. What do you think ?

Biohazard
07-16-2002, 11:49 PM
at this point, no idea where I'm going (Load ?)...
the head will certainly change, dunno exactly what I'll keep.

A cigarette and a coffee later, a decision :

This will be an... EggBot.

I love the contrast between the "low tech" working insect and its high valuable f****d-up load...

Didn't you know EggBots were cheap explorating drones sent on many systems to explore at low costs ?

This one has its antigrav down ... :)

Arms, cables, etc following... More ideas ?

very nice bug!

just an idea, you could make a nest (hope altavista translated correct) on the spider, and maybe add also some organic eggs around the bot

Biohazard
07-17-2002, 02:00 AM
Thx.
I was thinking about it, but as the bug is cruising across the land, I don't think a nest would be great (But I keep it mind if I have enough time to finish the main stuff).

But I keep your idea of minions (like the ones following the guild navigator's aquarium in Dune) !! Might be great ! Can't recall if it is in dune... Bah, the same than in Starship troopers, following the big brain boss. ;)

Here are some updates concerning the bot's posing.
Wearing cables on his right arm and giving the direction to the poor creature from the left hand...

The ground might be sand and water with little rocks...

Thats really awesome. i love the eggbot. What a cool-a$$ burden!

I'm not to crazy about the bug's head though. I think if you want to have it that far out from the body it needs to look more like a mantis style head (kind of like what I'm doing). Otherwise I think if your going to do a beatle-style head, i think it needs to be more attached to the thorax.

Just my 2 cents.

hey! that's a neat idea! there is some technological parts missing in the area around the laser canon... and I think that the main body still need a little spheriphy ;)

Thx ! I don't regret my coconut. I'll update the Eggbot this evening (afetr work). Try to put 2 arms on a coconut & let it express something... Impossible. ;)

I'm not to crazy about the bug's head though
The same, Thx for your idea. I'll do it more triangular and mantis style as you said. Great !

Well for my first comment here on CGTalk... i can say that i'm impressed by the speed and the quality that you are doing your work!

I'm eager to see the new bug head though...

Keep up the good work!

At last someone in the CG community is creating something original !!!

Well not to say to much in this first comment... and to keep the head of the creator to the ground ;) i will come again later...

a+

Thx Strike !!

The eggBot was totally unexpected, in fact... When I was talking about the challenge with Pascal, I had only the idea to modelize a dung-beetle pushing his ball of shit... ;)

Aoutch! Thx Popov too. Sure I'm happy to read such kind of remarks about my work but I'm really sure that people here are working on great and original stuff too. (Psss, Popov, I won't make any new friend now, you know that ?) ;)

By the way, the duty is back. Insect's head won't be forgoten... Next update, for sure.

Here's the last update about the Bot. It won`t change allot now, but if people kick my back about something I've seen on the mesh.

Then, the head is still a pain in the...
Why not puting a big ugly electronic plug instead of it, deeply in the bug's throat ?

The typical "Generic Alien Remote Controler" with a bunch of cables linked to the bot... I'm on it. :) What do you think ?

Thanks !

It's not finished yet of course, but I can see now where the whole mess is going, ;)

I'm preparing an update concerning the plug in the bug's mouth.

I'm not sure env & reflections are allowed, but I wanted to improve a bit. In a way, I won't let my image without texture, so...

And an animation will soon follow.

Thanks again for the support !! :bounce: :bounce:

Holy moly, I didn't check this for a few days and now this! The eggbot is marvelous, really dig the look of it - the modeling detail overall is incredible too!

Greath devellopment between this bug-robot relation...well i would'nt call it a good relation... because of the head plug! ;) but i guess that the background story of it all would be interesting

"soumission!!!" !!!

I love it! :buttrock:

Is it a vision of lifeform becoming slave to the machine? Aaaaah! I think so...

...We will see anyway in the sequel to the Matrix...

cant wait to see the next progress...Good work...

p.s. : quand meme pas mal MAX! :)

Biohazard
07-19-2002, 04:49 PM
Yeah, that's it.

Slave to the machine. ;) You'll feel it right on your back !!

I need to improve the scarab mesh now, cause it's the beast, sure.

Some more gore would be welcome too, What do you think ?

I've put bubbles around the plug for the moment, perhaps green slime falling on the ground would be great ?

Here are the last mods on the EggBott. The head and the inside still need some more detail.

Do you see something else.

EAGER for CRITS, yes I am. :wavey:
(That's how you grow)
