This driving me nuts:

How the heck do you get a movie texture to work in Maya? I want a computer monitor to display a movie file as a texture on the surface of the screen.

It's ridiculously easy in other apps. What is the damned secret to it?

(sorry, I've been trying to get it to work for days)

Yea Maya's a bitch! You need your movie as frames e.g movie.001.tga (use F-check to rename/ renumber if needed). Make a file texture on your materials color map. Load the first frame of the movie sequence with the 'use image sequence/ or file extension' button checked (i don't have maya on this machine so its something like that). Make sure you are at frame 0 and set a key on the file extension, move time slider to e.g 100 and change file extension to 100 and set key. To loop the movie open the graph editor, select the graph and set post infinity to ... the right option. Also try the help files (there's a movie texture but i've had problems with it)

Maya is a program by programmers for programmers (unfortunately)

You have tried the Use frame extension ? You have to keyframe it relatively to the time. Or even type :

file1.frameExtension = frame

,if you just want the rate to be the same as your project time line.

if you're using an avi file, check the codec, many of them dont work in maya.

Oh and if you are on osX you will have to name your Quicktime .qt instead of .mov, I don't know why at all (????)

Thanks, guys. I'm on a PC.

I got it to work by:

- rendering the animation as individual frames. I made sure each frame was named in the file.#.ext format

- applying the animation frames as a File Texture, as opposed to a Movie Texture

- turning on Frame cycling in the Attribute Editor

- applying the "file1.frameExtension=frame;" expression to the frame field located below the Frame Cycling box

Works!

Your replies gave me more keywords to use for a Search, that led me great threads on the topic.

Thanks again!
